A friend of mine left for the weekend to go to Disney World and asked me to watch his place, feed his dog, etc. I've been doing so evey day. We usually shoot in his back yard (in the county) with both neighbors 200+yars to either side with trees in between. No issues in the past.
My father in law picked up some tupperware and I was heading over to check his house, so I tell him to tag along and bring his gun. I bring my Ruger Mk II and 357. We check on the house, let the dog run around. We then break out the new guns and commence to shooting as I've done numerous times over the past 3-4 months. About ten mins later, i hear some guy yelling so I place my gun in my holster and approach him.
Enter "Red faced Rob" the neighbor.
"Hey you jack asses, don't you realize I can hear you shooting at my house. This is too loud."
This is about the point I would like to have a "Here's your sign" T shirt on. I just give him a "damn that's a stupid comment" look. My father in law grabs my younger son. He goes on ranting about how this isn't my house and I had no right to be here shooting, etc. Never once asked us to stop.
I then approached him and introduced myself. This is when I learn his name, Rob. I then asked if he would like to speak to the owner. I then call my friend and put him on speaker phone. My friend then says i can shoot there and everything is kosher. I try to calm him down but he keeps yelling and being rather obnoxious.
He then tells us to "stop what the F were doing or I'll call the cops". I then told him his language was inappropriate, especially in front of my son and I then ask him to leave before I call him in for tresspassing. He then whips out his phone and calls 911 and is yelling at the lady and gets in his car and leaves.
Fast forward about twenty minutes, during which time we pack it up and wait on the sherrifs officer. The SO then goes by the house and goes to see the neighbor and then comes to our house. I've met him before in the local ER (I'm a family practice resident) We exchange pleasantries. He says we are completely in the right, but that there is a noise code after dark. He says we can commence shooting.
I call my friend and he agrees. I was going to quit, but to be spiteful I sent my loudest 357 mag stuff downrange...only had 9 rounds left. In hindsight, probably not neighborly, but dang, if the guy was nice and just asked us to stop I would have without hesitation.
Anyhow, what say yall. Keep shooting or find another place. My nearest place isn't in my friends back yard but maybe 10-15 mins away at some family land.
