Recently, I have been reading Jurassic Park and The Lost World b Michael Crichton while at work (I wait on call alot) and also rewatched the trilogy. In honor of the late Michael Crichton and celebration of the new movie Jurassic Park 4: Jurassic World, I want to pick the brains of THR members on what firearms you would use if you were the author of the books/movie.

In the books, the main weapons used are always tranquilizer guns, and in the movies the main weapons were a SPAS-12 shogun, a double rifle in .600 NE, and a host of other "movie guns".

To keep this from turning into a Zombie/Dinosaur/Alien Apocolypse thread (I am aware that THR deals only in reality) I am asking what you would give the game warden if you were the creative consultant for the new movie... and being gun nuts, I know we can't always pick just one. I want to know what 3 long guns and 3 sidearms you would want (must be feasible and something that can easily be carried) your movie hero to use.

I hope this is something fun to get some creative juices flowing....

I will go, I guess:

Long Guns:
1. CZ 550 in .500 Jeffrey (for big carnivores)
2. Springfield M1A SOCOM 16 (for smaller, faster predators)
3. Mossberg 590 12 gauge (for sprayin' n prayin')

Sidearms:
1. Glock 20 10mm (15 rounds of bliss)
2. Ruger Redhawk in .454 (6 rounds are better than 5)
3. CZ P-09 9mm (in case I need 19 rounds of 9mm for the little guys)

The size, body structure, neurological system, speed, and ferocity of the largest predators would make it virtually impossible for any individually carried/operated firearm short of flamethrowers and R.P.G.s to be quickly effective in preventing your death. But arming your actors with those may eliminate the thrilling peril the audience enjoys from these type of films. The smallest predators would be attacking in ferocious packs so good luck with one shot stops using any of small arms you listed. All your actors getting overwhelmed by speed and numbers by attempting to stand their ground would make for a very short movie. I imagine it would be similar to attempting to stop a swarm of bees with a can of Raid.

thank you.
my point xactly.
25 .50 cals wouldn't help you
very long.
now a law or rpg could help, maybe.
will not last long now........

I appreciate your imput, I really do. However the only evidence we have on he neurological system, speed, and ferocity is based on theory of the fossil record. Assumptions of size and body structure are based on fragments of skeletal fossils in most dinosaurs except for the few complete skeletons. So I do not think it is unreasonable to believe that a T-Rex, weighing about the same as a massive elephant at an estimated 7,000 Kilograms, can be taken by an elephant gun (in a movie of course). I also believe that a Velociraptor (anachronistic in the JP movies) that weighs an estimated 150-200 pounds can be taken with a .308. Other predators were the size of chickens.

I just want to have a little fun seeing what THR members would write into a fiction piece, not see who knows more about extinct physiology or who can be more logical... I just wanna have fun

Do a little digging (pun intended) and I think you will find that quite a bit is known about the size, body structure, neurological system, speed, and ferocity of many dinosaurs that is beyond mere assumptions.

Charging elephants are stopped with brain shots. The brain of a T-Rex is not much bigger than a human brain. Elephants are not attacking predators. Imagine the small target a T-Rex brain presents while being shielded by a massively more protective skull than an elephants (elephant skulls are not particularly difficult to shoot through due to construction) and much higher above the ground and thus requiring a very difficult high angle shot on a moving target. If you don't think making a stopping hit on an attacking raptor would be difficult view some videos on guys failing to stop charging big cats. There is a big difference between "taking" a predator with a .308 and "stopping" a 200lb predator with a .308. Those chicken size predators will be just as difficult to hit as a much larger charging dog and many have discovered how difficult stopping charging dogs can be.

To really answer your question: I would advise using whatever is to the firearm ignorant majority movie goer is the most exotic and menacing looking small arms available. Regardless of how effective or ineffective they would really be does not matter. Back in 1993 for the first movie the SPAS 12ga was that exotic and menacing looking small arm. Today it could be a bullpup .50 BMG semiautomatic rifle. A S&W .500 could be the handgun. Hope you found this to be along the line of the fun you are seeking.

Creative as the OP was this is still "What Caliber For Dinosaurs" and far too fantasy for THR.
