I think I got it figured out. I wasn't aware the top thing for the powder funnel on the expander die needed to be screwed all the way in. even after I did this and had the die set per instructions I didn't get any flare at all so set it per 44spl and got flare but I think it was too much cause I could put the bullet in by hand about 1/8 up the bullet.

STOP blindly following lee's instructions!!! Read my post #22. You are damaging your brass by making large adjustments and just shoving your brass in there. Re read your manual another time please. Sorry if that sounds offensive but these are simple fundamentals of reloading that you should have down pat by now. Setting up pistol dies ain't rocket appliances...

mike I use this site on my phone so its hard to follow some stuff. I just seen your post and will try that tomorrow.

thanks for the help.

Good thing you're asking questions. Bottom line is the directions that come with lee dies are suggestions on where to start to get you close. To get proper flare, seating, and crimp you will have to adjust in or out based on what your brass and seating depth and crimp is telling you. More flare, turn the die in. etc.

Also you never clarified whether you are using 4-die set or 3-die. With 4-die you can seat with one die and crimp with another, with 3 die you seat and crimp in one step.

just the 3 die set. last night making the dummy I set the seater up per instructions for no crimp and seated than turned it in to crimp.

I loaded up some 44Mag today. The pic shows a flared case, a bullet (Hornady 240 gr XTP) in the flare ready for seating and a finished round seated and crimped in 1 step. Lee 3 die set used.

The flare is hard to see, easier to feel. My flare may even be a wee tad overdone.

Stop whut yer doin' and start over. Back the powder die way out. Put a sized case in the shell holder and run it up into the die. Screw the die in until it hits the case mouth. Drop the case and screw the die in a bit (1/2-1 turn). Run the case back up into the powder through die and you should feel the case being flared. Remove the case and see if a bullet will sit on the case mouth with a little metal flared out bigger than the bullet's base. Screw the die in or out to adjust the amount of flare...

To seat a bullet into a case, the bullet need an "entry", a tapered portion larger than the bullet so the bullet starts easy and straight...
