I'm a dual citizen; American and Canadian. I spend the summers in CT and the rest in Canada.

I was thinking aboot ;) bringing some of my handguns down with me to CT this year. I found out that there is some sort of permit/certificate thing going on.

My only question is whether that permit/certificate is for purchasing handguns, possession of handguns, or both.

I won't be buying any handguns while I'm down there, I'd just like to legally possess my Canadian handguns and take them to a range on the weekends.

I am no expert on this, but your problem would be importation of the handguns into the United States. Even as US citizen, brining the guns into the US is considered importation. I have no idea how that process works.

CT gun law is explained somewhat below. Seems like you need an application to purchase a firearm, which is completed at the dealer. You need a permit to carry a handgun, but not to possess the handgun.

I would sure check on the imporation laws/requirements before coming to the border with the handguns.

IANAL, so don't depend on me, but as I understand it, without a Permit To Carry (referred to as a Pistol Permit in some places), the only thing you can do with a pistol in CT is admire it in the privacy of your living room. I've not read of any problems with denial on the whim of a Police Chief, but I have heard that it takes several months.

You want to get some good advice. To get the Permit, you have to be a legal resident of the US, which in your case would be a legal resident of CT. If you spend more time up north than in CT, someone could get picky. Good Luck.

I'm way ahead of you :D.

I called up the ATF firearms and explosives import branch, and they told me that as a American citizen I can legally temporarily bring firearms into the US without any kind of imporation paperwork.

I was told all I have to do is declare that I have firearms at the boarder, and I'm heading down for a period of time and heading back into Canada with the said firearms. If I was not a citizen I would need a form 6NIA. It was very clear with who I was talking with, and I ran through it with the lady just to be sure.
