Due to unexpected plans I'm most likely moving to CT (west hartford) from AL in a few weeks. Now I still don't know all that well about laws in CT (after surfing packing.org). From my understanding is that you can't carry in CT with a AL permit, but can I at least store my handguns in my aunt's house in CT? Im probably going to move to her house first.

so my question is...is it legal to just store your guns in the house in CT? And to just bring them to the range to practice with? I really want to make sure this because I do not want to get into any legal problems when I do move there...

oh...another question: Can you tell me of any ranges near west Hartford?? if I'm moving there I ought to know a range or two to sharpen my skills while there ^.^

Moving to Hartford?

If you own a black rifle, read up on our assault weapons ban.
http://www.cga.ct.gov/2005/pub/Chap943.htm#Sec53-202a.htm

It's similar to the expired federal ban, but bans a few more rifles by name as well as all select-fire NFA rifles. Fortunately, no mention is made of magazine capacity.

and whatever you do, DO NOT carry your handguns before getting your pistol permit-- even disassembled in the trunk of your car to the range. As best I can tell, you're free to carry your pistols into the state when you move, but they have to remain at your home or place of business until your permit is granted.

There's a decent public range about 25 miles south of town. They've got modest facilities for clays, and are set up for 50,100, and 200 yd rifle, indoor rimfire, and outdoor handgun. I think it's called the "Blue Trails Gun Range"

Edit: The only storage requirement that I've seen is that minors can not be allowed unsupervised access to loaded firearms. Nasty criminal penalties on that one.

I believe you may transport your firearms into the state WHILE YOU ARE MOVING IN. (Personal property exemption).

But, until you get your CT carry permit (fairly easy process) you may NOT transport your handguns outside your CT home.

Note that in CT you must store your firearms UNLOADED. Yup, NO LOADED WEAPONS IN THE HOME NOT ON YOUR PERSON.

Also, CT has an assault weapons ban. Any semis or select fire capable weapons on the proscribed list are verboten. However, you are allowed to have machines guns of any make (so long as they are full-auto only) and suppressors, aow's, and dd's. CT has an annual machine gun registration that must be renewed every year (June 30) ... a throwback to the pre-NFA days.

Here's a link to the state police (read every link):

Also, join the state NRA affiliate:

Blue Trail Range in nearby Wallingford is also a great source of information and would be a good place to start calling re: coming in out of state with handguns as well as pistol permit application prep.

316 N Branford Rd
Wallingford, CT 06492
(203) 269-3280

Note that once you get your carry permit, you are not allowed to carry in schools (as defined by CT law).

Good luck. It ain't all that bad here.

You can have certain so-called assault rifles in CT. Configuration is key. No tele-stock or bayonet lug or flash supressor.

Welcome to Ct

Welcome, There are a few of us here in Ct. Actually Ct has a very high pistol permit rate because you need a permit to buy a pistol so there are many who have permits but don't carry.

I believe You can't posess a pistol outside of your home without a permit even for range trips. You can buy rifles and shot guns without a permit or hunting liscense but there is a waiting period. There is a state assault weapons list which is bad. It is just an evil gun list because some of the guns on it aren't assualt weapons by any stretch. It is bad also because some guns are banned by name so clones are ok and some are banned by type which means they aren't.

The list is on the web at the dept of public safety website. if you go to www.ct.gov and search from there you should find it. there are also directions on how to obtain a permit. The good thing is that it is shall issue. Once you jump through the hoops you will get it.

As for ranges, there are some public ones, but there are a lot of fish and game clubs that have facilities. I'll take any one interested to mine. It's a private range in Berlin, Ct. Just send me a PM. Most of the clubs own or lease land for hunting deer and pheasant.

It sounds like you are committed to coming here. It is different than the south. It may be some what of a shock. Give me a message and we can go to the range

Gun Storage laws

Also, if I recall from my permit class, if your residence has or could reasonably have kids in it your guns have to be in a locked container when not in your posession with the ammo separate.

My question is: under the descriptions section of the AWB in CT, it lists:
Bushmaster Auto Rifle and Auto Pistol
does this include new-manufactured XM-15 models made by Bushmaster, or just the old, original bushmasters made back in the '60s and '70s?

I'll be moving there soon as well, so I need to know (you can guess why!)

And what really makes me laugh (cry?:( ) is that when I worked in a gun store in Greenwich, CT back in the '80s, we had almost all of these firearms in stock!

Stateline, I have an XM-15 I bought last year. There are plenty of ar-15s you can buy and AR-10s as well. Oh, no mag capacity restrictions either!

thanks for all the help guys...

so you can't have a loaded gun even at your own home without permit?:uhoh:

and you can't carry it to the range even if its in the truck uploaded without permit?:uhoh:

...what am I getting myself into...:p

Once you have your permit, you will be good to go. There are far less restrictions on carrying in CT than most other States.

I'm a Florida resident and formerly as CT resident. I still maintain my CT permit. The thing about getting your CT permit is that you have to get your town permit first. That was the big hurdle (financially and time-wise.) After you get that then you send in your application and a nominal fee to the state and they send you your permit.

New England tends to be a bit draconian in their attitudes toward personal firearms ownership/carrying. Be careful. Though to be honest, I had really positive experiences with LEOs regarding my carrying. My shirt pulled up in a restaurant (reaching for condiments on my table) one time and a fellow patron noticed my gun now sticking out. She got nervous and a police officer who happened to be dining there as well walked over and addressed me on the subject. He was actually rather low key about the whole thing. He quietly asked me if I had a permit and to see it. I produced the card and he informed me that my gun was sticking out. He then said that it frightened someone here in the restaurant and to be more careful in the future. Have a nice day, etc. It was all really low key and low stress. This was in Storrs, CT... Not the city though. I suspect attitudes will be very different nowadays.

It is not illegal to store loaded firearms in your home or place of business.

You are, however, criminally and civilly liable for any misuse of those firearms by a minor. If you've got kids in the house, it would be a really good idea to keep your guns secured. While your children might be responsible, their guests might not be.

Also, does anybody have CT's official definition of a barrel shroud, or a determination letter stating that the forward hand guard on AR-type weapons is NOT a shroud?

Why not apply for an out of state CT permit. But the way things are in CT I'm sure it would take more time than a few weeks though.

Thanks, Romma and Augustwest - that's just the info I was looking for.
And I did have a CT CCW, but it expired (my own fault - forgot to renew:banghead: ), but I've re-applied as a non resident so when I get established there I'll just flip the address.

you may not be able to "flip" the adress. You may have to reapply. Not sure though. I know for a fact that I wouldn't get the Out Of State permit if that was the case. Once you are a legal resident of CT, your permit may be technically invalid...

as a CT resident, the most time consuming task will be to get your town permit.

after that, when the state gives you the green light it's pretty much a quick jaunt over to your nearest state police barracks, hand over a check and get your picture taken. 2 minutes later out pops a carry permit from the laminating machine - just like our dmv (but even better as there aren't as many people waiting in line).

Note: As a permit holder, once you move (regardless of where you are), you MUST notifty State Police of a change in your address within a specified time, or YOU WILL BE CHARGED WITH A FELONY!

I think a permit is a permit is a permit in CT ... I could be wrong but if you are a non-resident issued a permit, I think all you have to do is phone/write in a change of address once you move to CT.

W00t CT!!!!

Blue Trails is only 15 minutes away from me. never been, but I've heard good things.

If you are up in the Hartford area, I know there are plenty of good ranges up there. I live in the New Haven area now.

Not sure how easy it is to get a license in Hartford. I got mine in Stamford, and it was really easy. 8 hour class, and then got my signature from the local cops. The guy who took my finger prints, told me that even though CT is a "may issue" state, they DO issue, unless there is really a legal reason why you are not qualified. It was something I was concerned about, because I got the license at 21 yrs old, and was concerned that they might not want to sign off on a "kid." Once you get the license, there is no diff. between a permit, and a CCW. you can buy or carry.

best of luck. Perhaps all of the CT members should get together for a shoot?

Unfortunately, I applied for my non-res permit before I knew my company would go under and I'd be out of a job, and, finally (!) getting out of NJ. According to CT info, I applied in Oct., so I should be getting my permit within the next week or two. I won't be leaving for a month or so.

You can move into the state with them and keep them as long as you were legal in your state of origin. Just get the CT state permit and be done with it. It takes between 60-90 days once you take the pistol safety course. DO NOT transport pistols to the range, long guns are fine. If caught, you will be guilty of a felony with no hope of getting a permit. In CT you need the permit just to transport pistols to and from the range since they would be considered "concealed" even in a case. If you get over to the east side of Hartford toward Montville, you should come down and check out Quaker Hill R&G. Active club with lots of members.

statelines, a couple of us THR members get together @ QHRG. 280plus, Juggler, peteinct, and myself have shot together in the last few months.

I know of Quaker Hill (back when I lived in West Hartford) and Blue Trail, and a neat little range in Greenwich (doubt it's still there) near the bottom of Greenwich Ave.

Mmmmmmmmmm, those were good times.........;)

Distra - cool! Will have to get together when I get up there!
