I'm thinking of taking some courses at the S&W Acedemy in Springfield, MA. Can I pick up ammo for class (and maybe to take home) at Cabella's in E. Hartford (ideally), or locally in MA? Or do I need to buy it locally and bring it with me.

I ask because I've been told in NY recently that I can't buy handgun ammo without a NYS handgun permit.

Any regulations in CT or MA about out-of-state residents buying ammo?

Thanks.

S4Lee,

If you purchase handgun ammo in New York State that can also be used in a rifle, just say it's for the rifle.

I was recently told in Massachusetts that you can only buy ammo with a Massachusetts Firearm Permit. My New York State Pistol Permit was not acceptable. I have not been able to confirm this.

You can also order ammo and have it shipped to the location of the S&W Academy.

Enjoy your class.

Sincerely,

Prof. A. Wickwire

Should be no issue theres only very specific states that cant buy long rifles or ammo in CT. If you were from Kansas, California, or a few others but I pretty sure you wont have an issue. If buying handgun ammo say its for a carbine they know I am not 21 but sell me hand gun ammo all the time cause i have a CX4.

In CT they may ask for ID to prove age if you are buying handgun ammunition. Other than that, no hoops to jump through or songs to sing.

Don't know anything about MA, however, other than meal options around S&W Academy are sparse at best. Best pack a lunch.

Enjoy your class.

To the best of my knowledge, as a non-MA-licensee, it will be illegal for you to purchase ammo. I't's also generally illegal to posses a firearm in MA or ammo without a license (or FID) - I don't know if there's an exemption for attending training.

I recommend you contact GOAL (www.goal.org) and ask them. They know the MA laws very well.

You must be a resident with a valid FID or LTC to purchase ammo in MA, No exceptions. You must have a non resident permit to transport/carry a rifle, shotgun or pistol in MA. Don't even think about coming here with any firearms with out a Ma LTC if you get caught you will be charged with a felony and spending serious time at one of our state faucilties.
Best bet is FORGET ABOUT COMING TO MA It's not worth the trouble and aggravation.

Hmmmm... I found this link:
http://www.mass.gov/legis/laws/mgl/140-131g.htm

Chapter 140: Section 131G. Carrying of firearms by non-residents; conditions

Section 131G. Any person who is not a resident of the commonwealth may carry a pistol or revolver in or through the commonwealth for the purpose of taking part in a pistol or revolver competition or attending any meeting or exhibition of any organized group of firearm collectors or for the purpose of hunting; provided, that such person is a resident of the United States and has a permit or license to carry firearms issued under the laws of any state, district or territory thereof which has licensing requirements which prohibit the issuance of permits or licenses to persons who have been convicted of a felony or who have been convicted of the unlawful use, possession or sale of narcotic or harmful drugs; provided, further, that in the case of a person traveling in or through the commonwealth for the purpose of hunting, he has on his person a hunting or sporting license issued by the commonwealth or by the state of his destination.

Talk about run-on sentences.... Anyway, I don't have a carry permit in my home state, so I would be a little leary of trying to use this law to justify having my own gun. Maybe after I get my FL permit, which I think I'll then qualify under this law.

I suppose I could always rent a gun from S&W for the class, but then (I think) I'll still have to buy a holster. I'll have to look into how much they charge. I wouldn't mind checking out one of those M&P pistols, but then again, maybe it's more trouble than it's worth....

You know, I would think that you are not the first out of stater to take a class at the S&W Academy, and that they would probably know well all the rules that govern out of staters. You might ask them.

its been coverd so far

for ammo
CT jsut wants to prove age.
MA wants an LTC or FID/foid to prove your ok to buy at home

to have a gun in state you need some kind of license, how ever. if NJ is hard to get. maybe get an out of state MA or CT license. while in state MA licenses, specificly Hicap's are tricky to get depending on town. out of state licenses are handled by the State Police and are easier to get.

Call SW first. as said your not the first outta stater to take thier classes. im sure they will have a gun and holster you can use.

while your in springfield visit the REAL Springfield Armory.

wont find any overpriced M14 clones there... just the real deal.

oh and if you do end up in MA and need to get ammo i can suggest a few places. keep in mind ammos kinda expensive here as the AG slashed the market by suing mail order companies despite thier complete and total legality and the AG complete and total lack of jurisdiction.

I emailed S&W about bringing my own gun from out of state last week, and they said, basically, "Don't worry about it", along with "lock it in the trunk". I wasn't going to worry about it until Highlander brought it up. They offer rental guns for the classses, but (according to the website - I didn't ask about it) holsters are 'available for purchase'.

As for the ammo, I was hoping to just stop at Cabella's on the way up, but just wanted a backup in MA if they happened to be out. I can also buy at S&W, but wasn't sure if they charge a premium becuase they got you right there.

Maybe I'll call tomorrow and see if I can talk to someone over there...

Thanks, all, for the tips!

you may want to call cabelas and double check. I had a friend buy a .40S&w there and he had to sit around for 45 minutes while they ran a federal background check (or so he called it) on him. With a valid CT pistol permit he should have just been able to walk in and walk out 10 minutes but i guess they have a company policy that everyone gets checked regardless. Also Hoffmans on the berlin tpk will require a pistol permit to buy handgun ammo. Company policy set in place to deter gang violence.

In CT, non-residents can buy whatever they want. Some stores ask for a CT carry permit if you are buying pistol ammo, but that is store policy, not the law. I have boght ammo (albeit rifle or .22LR) at Cabelas East Hartford on numerous occasions, and they have never asked me for anything, not even a drivers license.

lat time i was there, 50 rounds of .45 was. 11$? 11.50?

i cant remember what brand it is, but its equivalent to Magtech or American Eagle. cheap, rental ammo

but this is thier range price, they may offer better prices for classes. like i believe Sig Acadamy does.
