Let me start by saying I've never fired, handled or seen (other that pictures) a Steyr M-A1.

From reading about the Steyr, it appears to be polymer DAO (partially pre-cocked) gun with a Tennifer finish. This immediately makes me want to compare it to a Glock or the Smith & Wesson M&P (OK, the sights are a little different, but still pretty similar overall).

Could someone who owns both the Steyr and either the Glock or the M&P (or better yet, both) compare and contrast them? Much appreciated!

Nice guns & the one I rented had good ergos, better than me accuraccy, and seemed very reliable. My only complaint were those goofy sights

I just ordered one; finding information on them is a bit of a challenge but you can find a lot of good information at this site: http://www.steyrclub.com By the way CDNN has them right now for $349 NIB. That is cheaper then the best price on either the Glock or the M&P.

Actually, the triangular sites are Steyr's claim to fame. They still exist. As well as the their safety. They have a key lock, and trigger safety. The M-A1's don't have a manual safety, however. The older M series do.

I used to have a Glock...I never warmed up to it. I had an older Steyr M9 and loved it but I traded it to my brother for his AK. I regretted that until CDNN got a bunch of M9A1s in. Well, I'm back in the Steyr business. The newer M9A1's don't have the old trigger guard safety (which I didn't like anyway) and have a standard rail. The grip has been changed to make it more ergonomic and I find it more comfortable than the old M9. The trapezoidal sights are very good for defensive work as the eye is drawn very quickly to the large front triangle sight but for long range work they don't work for my old eyes. Others have no problem with them for long distance accuracy. If you haven't found it yet try going to www.steyrclub.com. Lots of great info there!

I have four Steyrs (M9, S9, M9A1, M40A1) and will not hesitate to buy my fifth when the new SA1 is available. I paid over $500 each for two of my mine (pre-CDNN) and considered the gun to be worth far more than that. They are wonderful shooting guns with significantly reduced recoil.

As to the sights, if the traps don't do it for you the sights can be changed. I happen to like the trapezoid sights. You will also find that the gun is modular allowing you to swap slides and frames and to a degree, barrels.
