was goin to post this under Taurus 1911 vs. Regent thread but it was closed (wonder why?) anyway i've been looking at custimizing options and noticed quick that when u buy beaver tails and hammers, and especially sights they have different specs on them so now i'm left in the dark. should i just get a gunsmith to do it or how do i know what to get?

Also check out Brownell's. The prices may be a bit steep sometimes but they have everything you could ever want.

yeah I got my hand on a Brownells magazine so thats were i'm coming from. my main concern is gettin a beavertail and hammer. as far as sights i have to find a good gunsmith cause there pressed in.

well it depends on the beavertail. a drop-in won't look like guns that have them fit, since there will be a gap. you'll need a new hammer & hammer-strut to install.

it'll look something like this:

now if you want to fit the part, here's the work that you would need to do (if you don't take it to a smith)

Molleman I think you come out cheaper in the long run to just buy a gun set up the way you want it. If you want a minimum of non-GI sights and a beavertail you could save just a tad longer and come out better. Iif you want a gun to plink at the range with get an RIA Tactical which already has Novack style sights and a beavertail and can be had for under $500. You can get a Kimber Custom II for around $675 or a STI Spartan for $650.

When you get into having parts added by a gunsmith you can get into some serious money quickly. Say you get a gun with the crappy GI sights. You then have to pay to have the slide milled to accept Novack or Bo-Mar type sights, and if the gun is not stainless you need to refinish it. Same with fitting a beavertail to the gun so that it looks nice.

well I just dropped it off at a local gun store before reading this post (oops) but their supposed to be calling me with a price first. any thing over $100 i'll probally back out. I really like a RIA with the smooth wooden grips, but problem is availability.

Why the HECK haven't I heard of this being done before!?

Details, please!

that's because you don't hang out over on Sigforum. there are recently threads with this true custom feature added to a Dan Wesson CBOB and a Springfield.

it is work done by Bruce Gray of GrayGuns Inc (GGI) in OR...he's been doing it since the 80s
