I'm looking into a custom bolt gun and I am trying to get as much feedback as possible on the following actions:

McMillan G30 with PF or CRF, Borden Alpine, Surgeon, Shilen DGR.

I'm going to be building a tactical/target gun in .260 Rem. These actions all look outstanding, but I'm trying to get some more info.

i'm pretty happy with my big horn arms action (tactical/target in 260AI) and can offer more specific feedback later

i'd also look at GAP's templar and Pierce's

I was thinking about going down this same road on a little more of a budget build but with the same cartridge. May I ask your reason for choosing that cartridge?

The 260 Remington is an inherently accurate cartridge for long range (300-700 yard) work. The abundance of VLD bullets gives a reloader a vast pool to choose from. Much more powerful than the .223 and much better ballistics than the .308.

I have been looking at the Nesika Model K 700 Remington style action among others. I want to build up a tubed receiver gun in 260.

Whoa! Lots of comments but not a single one is addressing the question at hand. Taliv, thanks for pointing out other actions, would love to hear comments about those, especially as they compare to the others in terms of performance, price, quality, etc.

I shouldn't have mentioned caliber, but since that cat's out of the bag, I'm into the .260 Rem because it is a pretty good 1000 yd cartridge, some available 6.5mm bullets have high ballistic coefficients, the round does well with wind, and recoil is noticeably less than the .30 cal and bigger magnums.

Now, back to the question at hand: Anyone have any familiarity with the current offering of high-end actions from Shilen, McMillan, Borden, and/or Surgeon? Comparisons would be especially welcome from folks who've handled any and all of the above.

A friend, after much study, had a rifle built up on a Barnard action.
True, it is a purpose built F-T/R, but I don't see why it would be untactical for all of that, except maybe the 30" Bartlein barrel.

Once you swing the bolt & break the trigger on a Barnard, you'll sell all of your 2 lug rem clone actions.

Barnard actions do look pretty nice, and I like the 3-lug design of my Sako. Still, anyone with info on the actions I listed?

Have you checked out the Nesika Bay actions? They are made by Dakota Arms. I know that they used to be good, but haven't played with one in the last couple of years.

sorry i don't have much experience with the actions you listed. curious how you landed on them.

custom actions are interesting in the features provided. way too much to just start listing without a more specific question. my suggestion would be to call some of the sellers and chat them up. many of them are surprisingly accessible and enjoy sharing their knowledge and talking about their products. if you get the impression you're irritating one of them with your questions, move on.

I went with a Badger Ordnance M2008 action for my .260 Rem build. It has a lot of desirable features for a practical rifle. I just picked up three AW 10-round mags from Diann at Mile High Shooting. The M2008 action has "M4 style feedramps" for want of a better description. No wonder the guys at BO suggested I go with AW rather than AICS mags. The action is unbelievably smooth feeding from the AW mags. I have a .308 chambered barrel on the action at present since my gunsmith wanted to practice before installing my Krieger barrel.

carnaby, If I were you, I would also look into Lawton receivers as well. The 7500 runs at around $775.00 and has all the options that the Bordon and Surgeon has as far as porting. If you really are stuck on a Rem clone then they have a great receiver at a great price. I just ordered one for my .300wm bench gun build. A couple of friends of mine have 3 of the receivers you listed and I really can not see the difference in quality or accuracy of them from the Lawton. A savings of 300 to 600 bucks means more ammo or even better quality optics! Here is a link to them for you to have a look at. Good luck with whatever you choose.
