I am becoming interested in the Ruger SP101 with 4" barrel in .357 Magnum as a general purpose carry gun on the Farm and also for use by the women in my family.

First of all it will mainly be used with .38 Specials. 38 lead bullets for target practice and JHP+P for self-defense. Magnums will rarely be used (only by me) mainly for when putting down a animal.

Second all of the ladies in my family have small hands so the grip of the SP101is more of their liking.

What I don't like the Magnum version of the SP101 is the full underlug barrel as it makes it too muzzle heavy for my tastes. IMO the regular barrel of the 22 version for a better balanced gun.

All of this leads me to my question. Has anyone customized or have handled a SP101 Magnum model that has had the underlug removed (milled off)? If so what were your impressions of it?

The follow-up is does anyone know of a gunsmith that has done this job and the cost?

You might look at Gemini Customs. They do quite a bit of customized work on the SP101, GP100, and the Super Redhawk.
