Well, my search for a 5" .357 is turning out to be a difficult one, so I'm thinking about buying a 6" GP100 and having it cut down.

Is this the sort of no brainer job that any decent local smith can handle or do I need to send this off to some GP100 guru to do the work for me? I'd like to keep it local, but if cutting a barrel and recrowning is easy to screw up I don't mind sending it out.

Cutting a 6" barrel to 5" inches shouldn't be a problem, but milling a CORRECT dovetail to replace the front sight might be. A local 'smith would need a milling machine, the correct cutter for cutting the dovetail, and the necessary experience to do the job right. Unless you have someone in mind who has these qualifications I'd send the gun to a "Guru." It would be less expensive then replacing the barrel after a blotched job.
