Hey all,
I picked up an old Remington Model 12 pump .22 rifle. It was missing a few parts, but i've got it together, and it is working fairly well. Very accurate!

Anyway, without a round in the magazine, the bolt cycles back and forth just as it should. Just as the bolt locks up into the notch at the front-top of the receiver, the action bar reaches its forward travel, and the carrier drops into place (creating what I'll later call the "button" in front of trigger guard). At this point, there is probably 1/16 in. free play in the action bar. Depressing the button unlocks the action bar, and bolt can be moved back into the receiver. All is good here.

With a round in the magazine, as the bolt starts its forward travel, the carrier lifts the round into place, the bolt catches and loads the round, but as the bolt is getting ready to lock up in the receiver, things bind up. The bolt does appear to lock up, but the action bar does not continue forward far enough for the carrier (button) to drop fully into place. There is no free play in the action bar.

Now, if I briskly repeat the actions above, the bolt locks up fully and the carrier (button) drops fully into place. But, again, there is no play in the action bar, and if I wanted to extract the live round, the button is tight to depress, and the action bar is bound; it does not slide back easily without more force than seems normal.

If I fire the round, it automatically unlocks the carrier (button depressed), and the action bar slides back with a little less force, but still seems too much to me.

Here's my question: With a round loaded, shouldn't the action bar lock up with a little free play? Shouldn't the carrier (button) drop into place cleanly, and be easy to depress? If so, any ideas what could be causing the binding?

Maybe it is functioning properly; it is certainly working better than I will be at nearly 100 yrs old! Anyway, I would appreciate any advice given, and thanks in advance.

Take care,
Chris
