Someone on here, perhaps a year or so ago, built a cylinder loader using a toggle clamp ordered from Grianger (item # .3CXR9). But I'm unable to locate the post. I'd like to inquire from the person how well it worked. My question is, can anyone furnish me with the location of this post.
I built one a while back from materials I had on hand and it works quiet well, but it's just too big to lug back and forth to the range and I thought maybe using one of these toggle clamps might be the way to go to build a more compact cylinder loader. But before I order the clamp I'd like to know how well it worked.

My loading press.

My uncle gave this as a gift, he also has one. He made these so the cylinder arbor can be changed to use with other pistols.

The post I was looking for showed a pic of one he had built using a toggle clamp from Grainger. Looked like it would fit right in my range box. Just wanted to find out how well it worked. Guess I could go ahead and order the clamp and build one and if it don't pan out it won't be the first time I threw money into the wind.Ha Ha!

NCWanderer,
I think you may be talking about Grymster. He didn't post the images here on THR they were over at The Firing Line:

He goes by Grymster2007 over there. I'm surprised "our" moderator hasn't been more helpful, he's the moderator over there as well.

Grym was basically copying the concept of the loader that the charlatan who who used the alias 6gun4fun was shilling all over the internet. 6gun4fun has disappeared now, along with money from unfortunate souls who were lured in by his hype. A friend of mine and I warned people about him. One or two people on this forum got one before he decided to take the rest of the money and run.

Well anyway, Mykeal and Arcticap were also parties to the discussions with Grym, maybe they know something. I haven't seen anything posted about Grym's loader or whether it made it past the concept and modeling stages. You should contact Grym, I don't think I have seen him posting on any forum for a while.

Built this guy for short money.

Loading three chambers at a time balances the loading process nicely. Ram the balls home after installing cylinder in revolver.

I appreciate the help. I'll check over on TFL. I'm not a member there, but I've read quiet a few posts there. Could be where I saw the pic.

Hey that's good idea. I need a compact loader and that's about as compact as it gets. Think I'll make one to use until I can figure out something else.
Thanks

BigLube makes a nice one. I have one. BigLube.com

I tried to buy one of the new "White Tail Snipers" from RAI but the gentleman that owns it became seriously ill and while he claims that he will eventually get them out...I have written off my $80.00. Bad things happen to good people.

As of now, I'm a genuine fan of the BigLube.

I could be wrong, but I think I saw a pic of a finished one somewhere. Don't know it was Grymister's or not. I went to Graingers web site and the clamp in question looks like it would work. It has 1.125" of travel. That should be enough to seat a ball. But the handle looks sort of short....could be hard to seat a ball.

NCWanderer,
You're probably remembering shots of the original loader as delivered to a lucky few (lucky to get their orders filled that is...) before Tim took the money and ran.

Ginormous got one and took the best photos. Articap and Madcratebuilder got them too. I have played with with one.

That could be the one, can't be sure. These old brain cell get a little clouded at times. If I can't come up with something else I may just order one of the clamps and give it a try. Need to check the dimensions on the clamp first. Just want one that will fit in my range box.
Thanks

NCWanderer,
Since it uses a toggle link you have to set the height on it for a particular load and cylinder if you are going to take full advantage of the over top camming action. It is a bit more compact because it can use a shorter lever arm because of the compound linkage. It took a few cylinders for me to realize I needed to lower it and not take full advantage of the toggle to make sure I got full compression even if my charge varied a bit.

The handle gets loose as you use it because of the slop from the multiple pivot points, it's not excessive according to my friend who owns it, but he says it has loosened up in the last two years.

To make sure you compress the charge hard you can't have a hard stop and if you adjust the toggle linkage up and down you can set it so that you actually wouldn't compress a short charge.

The reason you can use the press as a wad cutter is because you can set the final closing height very precisely. This actually is a disadvantage if you are dumping powder from a flask at a match and you need to keep things hopping along. ± 3 grains won't affect CAS range accuracy, but that deviation can keep you from compressing the charge or potentially "locking" the toggle requiring more force to overcome the cam knuckle.

All loaders have limitations, some have fewer than others. The one from Big Lube is versatile and accommodates a lot of cylinders. Ones like mine are more specialized and load a narrow range of cylinders very well.

Mako
