My 14-year old son is interested in getting started in 4H competition shooting. He wants to be a Marine sniper and thinks this would be a good way to get a head start. :D At any rate, I would like to get him a decent .22 and most folks I talk to recommend CZ. We have a Ruger 10/22 but it seems the CZs consistently outperform the Rugers at our local range. I've narrowed it down to the 452 Lux or the 452 Ultra Lux. Which would you recommend for silhouettes, CMP Round and NRA Three Position? I've heard the 4H competition program is fantastic and would also be interested to hear from any of you that have experience with it.

The lux has worked great for me. The ultras are a little longer but I don't think they're necessarily more accurate.

I'd actually suggest getting one of the old 452 ZKM's made before the A-prefix US ones. They're the ones that formed the legend. I wouldn't part with mine for anything.

I have an American and an ultra lux, both are good shooters. I think 4-H is a wonderful program. I was an Instructor years ago. You may want to start with the Ruger as it may fit him better and can be upgraded with a heavy barrel. The CZ would probably be a step up though.

My 12 year old shoots the lux, as does over 75% of the team(20+ kids). None of them shoot the ultra lux. This is his second year shooting the lux. The first year he used a CZ 513. The lux was leap forward over the 513.

Our 4-H program here requires a bolt gun with only loading 1 shot at a time. Auto guns are not permitted. The single shot mag is perfect for that. Then he can switch to a 5 or 10 round mag to squirrel hunt with. For the 50' distance they shoot, I don't see any advantage with the ultra lux unless it balances better for him.

I would go with the lux over the ultra................

Either one would be a great rifle. The Ultra Lux does, IMHO, have a slight accuracy advantage in its longer (nearly 5" bbl) sight radius. No doubt, that younger eyes would benefit from this feature than those of us with older ones.
