CZ 452 Trainer 279.99
Marlin 60 179.99

1.)Both are by all accounts excellent rifles.

2.)I am not currently interested in a 10/22 or any other rifles.

3.)These are probably not the best prices to be found. Reguardless the Marlin 60 tends to be about $100 less.

4.)These are for plinking only.

Which is the best value? Which is the most rifle for the money? The most fun?

Please do not post telling me to get a 10/22. Me and my fiance are selecting .22 rifles and she has already picked a 10/22 CRR. We would like to each have different rifles.

That's a toughie - get both! But seriously, the CZ is the best bang for the buck, because the quality is just outrageous. The model 60 is simply not the same quality as the CZ but then again it is about half price. Not knockin the model 60 mind you, and if you prefer semi-auto get the model 60 (further, I'd get the stainless model 60 with the nicer sights).

That is a tough one, they are both excellent rifles.

My favorite feature on the CZ trainer is the tangent rear sight. Once you sight it in at 25 yards, you can simply move the slide for anything between twenty five and two hundred yards. (In twenty five yard increments) Also the longer barrel makes it shoot quieter. You will really notice this shooting next to someone with a 10/22. (Still need hearing protection though)

The CZ is a better rifle, with great sights, feel to it and I really enjoyed the 452 I got to use on a few occasions. If I had the funds to justify it I would pick one up but my wife would have my guts for garters.

I do own a Marlin 60 from the 1970s. It has rather crude iron sights on but for the price and what it has its an accurate, well made rifle. Its mainly my pest control and I stuck on a fairly cheap glenfield scope on it, which is more than enough for it. If anything though I like the feel of the Marlin 75 better with the shorter tube magazine and stock.

The only problems I seen with a Marlin 60 happened to one rather beat up version that while my brother in law was loading it, it went off and with the tube stopping so close to the end of the barrel a round went through two fingers before getting lodged in. A good well looked after Marlin 60 isn't likely to really do that though.

Depends on really your budget. If you can afford the better CZ rifle its well worth it.

The CZ Trainer/Special is one of the best out of the box 22lrs I have ever owned . If you want to use the open sights I would highly recommend the CZ.

I have nothing bad to say about Marlin or the specific firearm but CZ 452/453s are just in a class above the model 60 IMHO. They are just such wonderful firearms that have so much charm, build quality and accuracy for a very little entry price.

If it were me I would get the CZ.

Chris

I bought both at the same time. Both are great and one could always use a good bolt adn a good semi auto .22. I bought the CZ new, adn bought a lightly used Marlin for 75 bucks. I bought the CZ through Walmart for 221. I take them both to the range. For close to the price you list on the CZ you can have both if you shop.

Seems to be the concenus that the CZ 452 is the better buy.

I have found one at Gander for 239.99 but I cannot remember Gander's pricing on the Marlin 60 so I just used Davidson's pricing for both.

Thanks for all of your great responces. I am still looking for opinions but I guess I am pretty set on the 452.

most folks know on the rimfire site, that i am a big fan of both, especially the mod 60. Fisrt off, you should not buy a mod 60 new. get one used , at a pawnshop or gunshop. for 50 to 75 bucks. if you can find a pre 88 model on the mod 60 (or is it 85?), it will have the long bbl, and the longer feed tube, which will hold 18 rounds, as opposed to the 14 rounds it became after '88. Academy sells the mod 60 new everyday for 100 bucks here, in the houston area. So yours is way too expensive. Accuracy will not be a problem with a old pawnshop buy, they are allways accurate. It is so tough to beat any rifle, that can semi auto fire 19 rounds total , for pure fun! unless you have a remmy speedmaster, which can do 24 shorts at one time! ( mine will). One more thing, the new mod 60's use that 'walnut dip' crud , it is painted on , but the wood underneath is a pale white tan, yechhh!

Now the cz, i would get one of the 2006 or later models, that uses the single set triggers. You say , nahhh , no big deal, I don't need that! yes you do. I have two centerfire cz's with the set trigger, and now I know how powerful God must feel, when He is holding a gun! It is that big a difference, just amazing! Also , everyone knows that for a stock production pistol or rifle, CZ is about as good as it gets, unless you go custom. For beauty, fit , finish, fine wood, and superb accuracy. you will get your money's worth out of a cz. Plus it is a rifle that you won't mind handing down after 50 yrs, they really retain their beauty and value.
That being said, get both. I did, and i don't regret it. Just get the mod 60 used, is all.

I am not saying that all mod 60's are this accurate, this is world class stuff here, i just got lucky. but all the ones I have ever had, have all been very good accuracy. Anc cz is allways sick accurate, goes without saying.

"this is what it will do at 100, THAT'S RIGHT, 100 YDS!"

:what:

Damn I need to start hitting the pawn shops. Those groups are amazing - the wind must have been dead calm that day.

American Shooting Center sure is a great range.

Like I said I got my prices from Davidson's.

Thanks for your advice, Im sure Ill likely end up getting both.

I love my CZ452 American, and a friend has a Trainer that is awesome and comes with great iron sights. He really praises the accuracy of his Trainer.

You can get a Trainer for $216.99 plus $10 shipping (and your local FFL's transfer fee) from http://www.whittakerguns.com/

Click on New Rim Fires for prices. I bought my CZ from them, and the process was painless. If you decide to go that route, call them and they'll walk you through it.

The 452 that I bought new in the PRC has a phenomenal stock trigger. It is so good that I am dithering on whether not to get the Tikka T3 Tactical or the CZ's big brother in .308.

My litttle guys shoot the hell out of the Scout though, and even though I bought it for nearly $300 after tax and with an additional steel mag for 5 rds I would still do it again.

Sounds like you have decided, but I'll chime in anyway.

I have both guns. It really depends on what you want to use it for. Although the 60 is a fine rifle for what it is, just an all-around plinking fun gun, the CZ is really in a different class. It is more accurate (generally, although I know that there are some Wonder Gun 60's out there), less finicky (being a bolt action), and has a MUCH better trigger. However, if your intended use is to rip up watermelons in the back yard, go with the 14-round semi-auto.

Another plus for the CZ is that you can mod it with the Eric Brooks kit for an even BETTER trigger, and end up with something that you could shoot competitively, in rimfire sporter for example.

you are right sir! monkeybear, you can take one or two guns or rifles there, and shoot all day for 10 or so bucks. plus they have rifle ranges out to 600, and shoot IPSC there every tuesday night , I think. Plus all the range officers are very helpful, and Ray , the head r.o. is a world class pistol shooter, He just got back from some comps in Brazil, I think. Plus , Athena , the resident babe out there, is also a top notch pistol shooter. not to mention, they have shotgun ranges , clays, sporting lanes, etc.

Which is the most rifle for the money?

Marlin 60--CZs are great but cost twice as much (you chould be able to get a Model 60 for under $125. WAY more accurate than they have a right to be.

But the CZs are sweet, too

Ranger - Ive only been shooting a little while but when the weather is good, by that I mean low humidity, Im there for hours. Thats the whole reason me and my Girl are getting .22s she gets tired from shooting my big o heavy AR and my handguns after about 30min and for the next two hour shes just on one of those benches they have. So to cure that we are working on getting her a 10/22CRR and a Walther P22 so I figure "Hey, I want some guns too" :D

I really wanted the CZ after handling it but money for myself can be tight around Christmas time and the Marlin 60 feels good too. I just need some people to weigh in and just about everyone seems to think the CZ is the way to go.

I've had 3 Marlin 60s, one with the old style ejector and two with the new. None of them have been reliable. The least unreliable one functioned perfectly a few trips ago, then I cleaned it and it started malfunctioning again. Apparently there needs to be some gunk built up in key places for it to run correctly.

They're all plenty accurate, but the malfs have definitely soured me on that model. My next .22 will be a 452 American.

I went in for a Model 60 and walked out with a CZ.

Hold both of them - no comparison in the fit/finish.

You are comparing a bolt to semi auto, kind of apples and oranges.

In NJ, the CZ was over a $100 more though . . .

CZ-452.
As others have said, it is just higher quality. Really, they could charge twice as much for them and the rifles would still be worth it.
When I had mine scoped I could put a hole in the target and then put round after round in the hole.
I yanked the scope off because shooting at stuff at 100 plus yards with the tangent sight is just too much fun to miss out on and it is still scary accurate that way.
No comparison IMO.
