I have a cz 453 that i have been shooting with a 4x bushnell scope that i inherited but i want to be able to see the target better at 100 yards. I dont hunt with this rifle. What magnification should i be looking for so that i can get the precision that i know this gun is capable of at 100 yards. Am i naive for thinking that more magnification will help me make one ragged hole?

You're going to need a lot more than 4x magnification if you're wanting to shoot dime-sized groups. I would recommend at least a 9x scope. If it was my gun, I'd probably go with more. The better you can see, the tighter you can get your groups.

By the way, how do you like the 453? I've been wanting to get one for a long time. Is yours a varmint model or American?

Olympus, I am happy with the rifle so far but i wish 17 hmr ammo was cheaper:) I like the set trigger. Mine is the varmint model with the fluted barrel.

No. I'd get at least a 4.5-14 type scope, preferably 6-18 or better. I have exact same rifle with a 6-24x40mm AO, Bushnell Elite 4200 on it. Good luck and post results. Probably the funnest rifle I have.

If you plan on general use a variable scope up to 20x is going to be needed to really see what the rifle is capable of. A quality scope mentioned like the Bushnell 4200 is going to have quite fine cross hairs and really shines at the 100 yard and longer distance. A average but good scope like a Simmons 44 Mag. 6.5 x 20 will hold zero and is quite clear but the cross hairs are quite thicker. Thin cross hairs equal precision groups in most cases. If you decide on target from a bench you might also look for a Weaver T24 or T36 with a 1/8 min. dot. Both of these are quality scopes that will take you to whatever level you are capable of. Best of luck!

Scoped mine with a Bushnell Trophy 6-18X 40mm AO. Works fine at 100 yards - holds zero and .17 HRM holes are easy enough to see. I put a Hawke Eclipse 30 4-16X 50mm mil dot, lighted reticle on my CZ-452 .223. Ditto's for 100 yard shooting. Both can be had for at or under $200 shipped. The 30mm rings (Leupold) for the Hawke Eclipse were about $45, and like the CZ rings, if you can find them in 30mm, have the off-set detent in the rear ring that fits the notch on the rail of the CZ-527. As for the CZ-452, 453, they have a 13 mm dovetail rail that takes a different mount, which you know as you already have a scope mounted.

My highest powered scope is the Mueller APV 4.5-14x. It is okay at 100 yds, but obviously you will be able to see more with the higher power.

I'm looking at a mueller tactical 8.5-25x44 for $150 at a local shop. it seems really nice for the money. What do yall think?

Yeah, Muellers are good values for rimfires, IMO! I love that target dot - makes it natural to aim at. Short eye relief, but that's fine for rimfires.

I put a Nikon Buckmaster 6-18x40 on mine. I really like the sight picture on it. I think it's even better than my Bushnell Elite 6500.

I think the Mueller 8.5-25 Tactical AO would be a killer scope for a good shooting 22 rifle. I wish I had one. I believe it focuses down to like 15 feet too so shorter range shooting should not be a problem.

They tried fitting the mueller tactical 8.5-25x44 and it wouldn't fit with any of the rings they had! They are going to order an APV for me. I hope 14x is enough power for precise 100 yard work.

I really would go higher magnification. I think 18-24x (high end) would be about ideal for what you want to do with it, however I wouldn't go higher due to mirage. :)

You give up too easily on the rings. Oh well. You generally have to mount a scope relatively high on CZ's due to the bolt. At a glance, the scopes look high, but they work just fine.

I have an old Japanese-made Simmons 8-32x44 for CZ453. It is clear, rugged and an ecellent scope for this rifle overall. 200 yrds is not a problem.

I have one of the Mueller 8.5-25x44 Tactical scopes, it comes with a Mildot reticle, and had it mounted on a Savage 93R17-BV .17HMR. I found that at longer rangers (greater than 100 yds), the mildot reticle was too thick to use for the small .17 bullet. The Mueller is now on a Target .22lr and is a great scope for that. I've heard good things about the Mueller APV but, don't own one.

22-rimfire's comment about using high rings to clear the CZ's bolt is right on.

My CZ452 Varmint .17HMR is mounted with a Nikon Buckmaster 6-18x40SF, with the Target dot reticle. I've found this to be a great combination especially with the .17 bullets.

Here's a pic of my CZ452 Varmint, with a Nikon Buckmaster 6-18x40SF, using Warne 7.3 high rings.
