I have a CZ 527 Carbine in 7.62x39 that I bought for deer hunting in close quarters....Originally I wasn't going to scope this gun I was just going to shoot it open sighted...But I changed my mind and decided I might want to scope it now...I'd really want to maintain most of the quick handling, quick sighting abilities of the gun and was thinking of mounting a Millett DMS-1 1-4x24 on it...thought I'd run it by you guys first...any opinions of this possible setup...?

It's a hard rifle to scope because the bolt handle won't clear unless the scope is mounted high. To me that throws off the whole look and feel of the rifle. You can get a bolt modification done, but even then I just don't like it scoped. The open sights are very good. The only change I would consider for mine is ghost ring.

I started with a 1-4x then replaced it with a 2-7x Nikon. 1-4x is probably fine for hunting deer sized animals, but I wanted a little more magnification for paper plinking. Woof is right that the weight of a scope really takes away from the light handling for a bush rifle, but my eyesight is too bad to use irons. You'll need medium high rings to clear the bolt handle and a comb pad to raise your head up to the height of the scope.

Plus three on leaving it un-scoped. For all of the reasons mentioned above.

RNB65, and woof are correct.

Mine is scary accurate with wolf and handloads, not to much with alot of the commercial remington and winchester.

IIRC someone makes/modifies the CZ bolt handle to clear scopes. The one I saw wasn't all that pretty, but it was functional.

Ditto on the ghost ring, that would be awesome.

Forrest at HICKMAN RIFLES in Colorado Springs did the bolt mod on my CZ, and I couldn't be happier. When reblued it matches perfectly to the factory finish. Go Here! Right reasonable pricing and I don't have to perform contortions to get my head behind the scope, it all just flows like it should.

I have the medium high rings with a cheap Bushnell scope. Since I use reloads, 125gr Hornady bullets, and reloader7 It's extremely accurate at 100 and 200yds. For a little carbine it's great. As far as looks go, I could care less what it looks like. I even have a bipod and sling so I guess it's pretty ugly.

The modification of the bolt is trivial. James Calhoon is another shot that will sell you a modded bolt.

Here's a modded bolt showing material removed.

Here's a before and after. Note the height of the rings.

I think Calhoun is $45. You send in your bolt and get another back unblued. I just figure if I need to shoot further than I can with iron sights on my 527 carbine (100 yds tops) then I'm out of purpose for that rifle and should be using a different one. In other words, if I really need a scope it should have another rifle under it.
