Thinking about buying my 11 year old son a 550 FS in 6.5X55. I am a little concerned about the 20.5inch barrel and the European style stock. How much velocity do you think the 20.5 inch barrel will lose compared to the 22 inch barrel on the Winchester 70 Featherlight? I have never seen a rifle with this style stock up close and personal. Any help on fit and feel etc. would be a big help.
Thanks

Tell you what, you buy the 550 in 6.5swede and I'll trade you for my m70 featherweight .280. :neener:

The 20.5 should be fine und dandy in that caliber. Sounds like a GREAT gift.

You'll lose probably no more than 50fps (more likely just 30-40 or so) from that 1.5" reduction in barrel length. A deer won't be able to tell the difference. I've got an M96 (29.5" barrel) and a 550 American (23.6" barrel). I've chrono'd some handloads through both and saw about a 150fps drop (~2900fps in the Mauser, ~2750fps in the CZ). That was with 120gr Speer Hot-Cor bullets. Can't remember off hand the powder or charge, though it was Accurate Arms brand and a not quite compressed charge. They did use CCI 200 rifle primers and virgin R-P brass.

As to the stock questions, it really is an issue of personal preferance. Have your son try it out at the store and see how it feels for him. If he likes the feel then you're good to go. If not, look for something else.

I have that very rifle and like it well enough. Very accurate and attractive. Depending on how big your son is, he may find the CZ Euro-stock a bit of a challenge. I'm six feet tall and find the length of pull just right but many people feel it's a bit long. There is also a ton of drop which is fine if, like me, you have a meaty face and don't crawl the stock. But your boy might find it distracting. The 550FS also ends up being a bit heavy when scoped. CZ uses a heavy barrel profile to avoid the wandering zero that can sometimes afflict Mannlicher-style rifles. Couple that with eight or ten inches of extra hardwood and the overall package is heavier than it should be.

Despite the negative tone of the following paragraph, I like my FS. As I said, it's scary accurate and despite the weight is a very handy, very well-balanced package that points well and quickly for me. Don't sweat the short barrel. In the first place, the Swede does not need velocity to work. In the second place, CZ actions are stout and you should be able to make up for that shorter barrel with judicious handloading. Finally, my rifle proved to be just as fast as a Kimber M96 sporter (22 inch bbl) I used to own proving that velocity differences depend more on individual barrels than they do on pure barrel length.

I wanted some thing I could use year round and find ammo at any gun shop/store and it had to look good doing it, so I went with the CZ550 FS in .243

Also have it's little brother, 452 FS 22lr

I like mine in .30-06. I find the Mannlicher stock to be very classy and my wife cracks up everytime I mention that name. The velocity loss from a 1.5" shorter barrel would probably not be noticed at all. The 6.5 should be a great hunting round for medium game, almost the same as the .257 Roberts, no?

The Swedes started out with the 6.5x55 in the '94 Mauser carbine with sub-18" barrel; you will see them with extensions welded on before the legal rifle barrel length was reduced to 16". They didn't complain.

However, will Junior appreciate your refined taste in the Mannlicher stock?
Will you cut it off to suit his stature or require him to wrassle with a too-long stock til he "grows into" it? I'd consider one of the plainer versions I could edit to suit him, splice back as he grows, and restock when he gets his full growth.
