Having finally completed the extensive requirements necessary to legally own and carry a handgun here in Costa Rica, it's time to choose one. I'd like to import one of mine from the states but between flying back to get it, taxes, import fees, and all the time, hassle and further expense to get it registered here it would be even more costly than just paying the exorbitant local prices. Like $1550 for a Sig P220...

The most reasonable arms dealer that I have found here handles CZ. I am partial to Sigs and 1911s, have a small collection of those, but no experience with CZ or the Hi Power for that matter.

A CCL here is like a marriage - it ties an individual person to an individual firearm, by serial number, so I need to choose well. Would any CZ-75 Compact owners care to offer an opinion?

There are many CZ fans here. I have purchased 4 or 5 CZ's over the years, and only one of those remains in "defense" duty (my wife's CCW). Several of mine had problems from the beginning; some of the problems were fixed by CZ-USA and some were not. Thus, for a pistol that I would be "wedded" to forever and would not have a chance to test before committing to, I would definitely not pick a CZ. I would recommend the SIG, a Glock, or a modern BHP for your purpose and situation.

I guess you are referring to CZ 75D? they have a few versions of "compact" in 75D series, you need to make sure which is which ... I bought my first CZ 4~5 weeks ago, so I'm a newbie to CZ, but I'm liking it. It is a euro version of "P-01" I bought, which is stamped as 75D Compact. .. (confusing enough?). I can carry it IWB all day comfortably in the HBE holster without even missing my Kahr PM9 one bit.

I originally wanted the "PCR" model (euro version is called "75D Compact", too... LOL), it has a slimmer frame at the muzzle end, better to carry, but the special prcie on P-01 at that time was irresistable.. so the PCR has to wait.

Out the box trigger is not as refined as my HK and Kahr, but after hundreds (uncountable) rounds of dry firing using o-rings + 400 rounds down range, it is now very smooth. My P-01 shpts straight and true, great ergo, 100% relibale, so far -- and I expect it to continue.

For the all mix-up model # "conversion" between Euro and US, pls see this thread: http://www.czforumsite.info/index.php?topic=27902.0

By the CZ75 Compact, I assume you mean the steel frame, manual safety model. I don't own this one, but I do have a 75D (decocker) PCR Compact and am very pleased with it. Based on the quality and performance of this gun, I can highly recommend CZ75s to you.

For clarification, yes - the one in stock is the 75 Compact with steel frame and manual safety, not the P-01 or PDR. Alas. :(

I had one and loved it! It was super accurate and dead nutz reliable. I would still have it but my sister claimed it as her own.

Of all the CZs I've owned, the steel compact was my favorite, and wish it back with a vengence! Still have a 75SA, and will allways own a CZ of some fashion.

I've owned mine for five years and take it to the range quite often. The double stack mag made it feel thick in my hand and since this picture was taken, I changed out the grips to slim, fully checked cocobolo grips. It feels better in my hand since the change. Fit and finish was very good out of the box. The trigger was a bit gritty but smoothed out with use. The one thing I wish I could change is the long reach for the trigger when fired in double action. When I carry this gun, it is cocked and locked. Being all steel, it is a bit heavy and a good belt/holster combo is a must. Accuracy is very good if you do your part. The only trouble I've had was a failure to feed issue which occured after many rounds down range. I changed out the recoil spring and the problem was solved. Maintenance is very simple...no need for any tools to field strip it. Over all, not the prettiest gun I've ever seen but it's a work horse and very reliable.

Roswell,

First of all hello and welcome to the forum.

I own a "few" cZs including two Compacts; the steel frame and manual safety. Have never had a problem with any of my cZs and I shoot the Compacts better than the full size version. I have heard of an aluminum version of this pistol and just missed out on purchasing one a couple of years ago. To me, it would be the ideal carry pistol. If you are asking for an opinion on buying one, I say yes, go ahead.

Nope. That's why they get shot so much during varmint season - they can't read "Season Open!" signs. Just kidding!
My first CZ was a Compact steel frame. Worked like a charm, heavier than the alloy or poly frames, but dead nuts reliable. I'd be quite comfortable being "wedded" to one.

No worries. Great guns. I have two and the Kadet Kit, no hiccups ever, very accurate and Czexy! I've carried a Compact 75D PCR daily for 10 years now INSTEAD of my Sig P228 which sits in the safe.

The CZ-75 compact and variants like the P01 & PCR are fantastic weapons. Extremely accurate, ergonomic, reliable, durable and a great buy!....They certainly don't get much better.

As far as poor Zak Smith's misfortunes go, he apparently has a black cloud over his head that follows him around. :uhoh: ........ If you search the entire world wide web, I don't think you'll find another soul that actually purchased 4 or 5 (NIB) CZ's and only had one function properly. :scrutiny:

Of the 8 CZ I own, Zero issues. The CZ P-01 I have been carrying the last few years has been flawless and the coating is handling well. OP if you can get your hands on a P-01 that would be perfect (I own 3 P-01's BTW) and even if you do not then I would be confident with any CZ.
CZ makes a Aluminum thin grips that take skateboard/deck tape which I use to make the grip a little easier to conceal.

I have owned 2 CZ's, both of them were extremely reliable and durable after many thousand of rounds.

I think that the volume of positive response speaks for itself. Count me in with the crowd. I was sold on CZ by a friend that brought his P-01 to the range and bet me that if I shot it, I'd put down my P228 for good. As much as it pains me to say, he was right. Every CZ I've adopted since then has not dissappointed. If you must "wed" a pistol that is not a 1911, the CZ's are an excellent choice!

Agreed, ozmosis, I wish I could find a P-01 version but might not be able to get that here. The other available models at present are the standard 75 B and the BD Police (that one priced north of $1100).

Those aluminum grips sound interesting, as do glassman´s thin cocobolos.

Thank you all for the replies! Great forum you have here. After all the effort to get armed here, pride will force me to post a pic of my new toy when this process is finally over.

I have a P-01 and love it. I just had my dealer order mine in, took all of 3-4 days for the distributor to get it to them (this was back in late 2008). Never limit yourself to just what's on the shelf if what you really want can be readily gotten from a distributor.

Not that I'd shake a stick at a compact either, just that if you want the lighter alloy frame models, just ask a dealer to get you one. In Costa Rica, it may take longer to get what you want, but I'd ask and find out.

Thin aluminum grips on my 75B SA, Thin cocobolos shown on my other two CZs in my other post:)

IF you can get the PCR, DO IT!! I never tire of recommending this gun to everyone. My BHP sits in the safe now in favor of this gun!

Coincidentally, I had owned a P228 for 10 years prior to acquiring my PCR but had never shot very well with it. The PCR's grip/hand fit and shorter, smoother DA trigger are far superior. The SIG did surpass it in the SA trigger pull and sights. I sold the P228. It is also worthy of note that they are of nearly equal size, even fitting in some of the same holsters. And with thin cocobolo or aluminum grips, the grip is only slightly wider than the single-stack P225/P6, yet holds six more rounds.

Fantastic firearm, buy it and you won't regret it if 9mm and DA/SA is your thing and you have average size or larger hands.
