Need advice please. I am trying to narrow down my choices here. Both feel very good in my hand but I have not been able to shoot or rent. I want the pistol for target shooting and (possibly) night stand gun. Would like opinions from anyone who owns both or has shot both in a 9MM. Which do you prefer and why?

Joistman,

I have the SP-01 and the standard CZ-75. There is little real difference between the 2. The SP has a longer beavertail, the picatinny rail, re-curved trigger, and full length dust cover out front. If you ever think you might add a tactical light or lazer, then you would have the get the SP.

Otherwise, the 75 is an excellent pistol. If you want to shoot any which way you want to, I can tell you from first hand experience, a CZ is hard to beat (I've had a bunch of 9mm's through the years). My SP, with it's pet hand loads, can deliver 1.100" rested groups from 25 yards. That's impressive for a "service" grade pistol. The SP mag holds 19 rounds, and with one up the spout, that's 20 rounds.

Quite a few custom items are now available and can make a significant difference in how your CZ handles and feels.

If JUST for nightstand, I might lean to reccomending the SP01, so you can slide a light on that rail. Otherwise, the standard CZ-75 would be just fine, and will also take the great Crimson Trace Lasergrips. Flip a coin. :)

Your post makes for a hard question to answer. I own a number of CZ's, including the two you mention, and I would be hard put to make a substantive decision between those two.

As armoredman suggests the rail on the SP might tip the decision to it if you do, in fact, use it as a bedside gun. Having the light on it would certainly be a good idea in that case. Other than that, you just cannot make a bad choice here.

I have CZ-75's and they are a pleasure to shoot. Here is another idea though, how about a cz-82? 9mm makarov, smaller and amazingly accurate. Also they are very reasonable right now, around $210 at most places.

No disrespect Paradox 998 but, it looks like the CZ 75 SP01 is preferred
by a very slight margin due to "accessorizing". Is that a word?:)

Thanks to all posters for your opinions!

I don't care for lights on guns. THus, I say go with the standard 75. If you do get the SP01, I would suggest that you do a lot of shooting with the light mounted. Lights greatly change the handling characteristics of a gun.

My P-06 has a rail, didn't really care for it much, until I heard something at night. The next day I bought a light for it. Worth it for a nightstand gun for sure.

You have narrowed it down to two very fine guns. I have a 75BD and it is a tack driver. Have you considered a compact 75B? The compact 75B is available with a traditional safety and can be carried "cocked and locked", while the P01 only comes with a decocker.

Edit: Sorry. I just realized you listed an SP01 not P01. Why did they make the names so similar?
