I want a CZ 75 for home defense, range, and concealed carry/car usage; I like the sleek feel and classic look. Also, I want something a little larger for shooting accurate groups at the range, as well as being a better fighting gun than say my Ruger LCR (I work in the worst part of town and don't think the 5 .38s will cut it against multiple armed assailants).

That being said, I've often seen it posted that the CZ 75 isn't obsolete, but is probably outdated. I imagine these people prefer guns like the SP01 and P09. Am I really short-changing myself by not choosing one of these over the tried-and-true CZ 75?

To me, the SP01 is too heavy/big, and frankly a little blocky-looking (I know looks shouldn't matter, but they do, even if they are at the end of the list). Does the weight up-front help at the range at all? Also, the CZ 75 takes the same mags, so the SP01's higher capacity is moot.

The P09 is nice, but its mags are pricey and I actually would like a little weight for shooting at the range.

So basically, for the TLDR crowd, am I really losing much by going with a CZ 75 over a CZ SP-01 or P09 with regards to a paper-puncher/self-defense dual-use pistol?

The CZ-75B is not obsolete. The only thing you are giving up is the light rail. I have a 75B, 75 Pre-B, 97B, 75D PCR, Kadet, and Kadet Kit. They are all very reliable, and accurate, and I carry the PCR, and use the 75B as a HD pistol.

My shooting buddy has the SP-01, and it is a tack driver. Very well balanced, and a great shooter. I enjoy shooting that too, and it you want a rail, that is a great choice, as is the lighter, more compact P-01. I prefer CZ's metal framed guns, but there is nothing wrong with the P-07, and P09. Both are excellent.

I've had my SP-01 now for 4 months, at the range yesterday I allowed several people to try it, all said it was very accurate along with hefty. These guys were all police officers, some current some retired. They all remarked on the recoil, how it was almost non-existent. But they all shot 1 to 2 inch groups. One said ( being a Bulls Eye shooter) how much he loved it. The weight has a lot to do with that, along with the low axis of recoil. My only problem with the gun so far was a broken firing pin retention roll pin that broke and allowed the firing pin to slip out passed the hammer, sent back to CZ and had repaired, they said it was probably due to dry firing. I now use an o-ring between the hammer and the firing pin. The real fix as I've read is to install a solid pin as opposed to the rolled pin, which you can get from CZ Customs. Other then that, after putting over 3000 rounds through it, I still just love it. Holstering is good, really know when it seats home, and easy to draw. I'll keep it and make the upgrade.

I had the SP01 decocker version. Didn't like the decocker so let it go. Anyways, the pistol itself was fantastic at the range. Accurate, easy to shoot, low felt recoil.

The only difference is the weight up front, I currently still have 2 CZ pistol a 75 shadow and a SP-01 shadow. Side by Side at the range the follow up shots a little faster out of the SP-01 due to the weight up front but I really like the balance of the 75 better.

Which ever one you pick you'll be happy with it CZ's are wonderful pistols.

I own a CZ85 (Ambi control CZ75), an SP-01 Shadow, and a P-07. For a general purpose defense and "plinker" you can't beat the P-07/09 model. For more high speed competition us, the SP-01 is one of the best guns in the world. The CZ75 is best for anything but is fine for everything.

I have a 75 B, 85 Combat, 97 B, and 75 D PCR. I love all of them and think there's not a bad gun in the entire CZ lineup. I'm not a polymer gun guy, but if I had to own a polymer gun it'd probably be a P-07 or P-09, depending upon which size I wanted/needed.

I'm with I6turbo: I have a P01 and love it for it's more compact size and better ergonomics for my smaller size hand. If I were looking for a polymer CZ I would go with the P07.

My CZ-75 is my most accurate centerfire semi-automatic pistol I have, and my favorite - out of the 25 or more I own. My FiL liked it so much he bought himself one, a brand-new one, and he is CHEAP.

I have several CZ's. All excellent quality. I have a 75B in .40 S&W. I did change the grip and had adjustable sights installed. I shoot it every week.

I have the SP01. Shoots great. The only time it has jammed was due to letting it get pretty dirty.

I also have a P07, which I like enough to consider trading the SP01 for a P09 - but I like the heritage of the original 75 design, which is somewhat preserved in the SP01.

I used to have a CZ75 SA, which was also a very nice pistol.

Frankly I think you'd have a hard time going wrong with either the SP01 or the P09. The main difference will be weight, and the fact that you can convert the P09 from decocker to manual safety whenever you like.

Maybe a little outdated in the sense they have been marginally improved upon since 1975. Most things have though, and the originals are still great guns.

I picked up a 75B SA, which is a single action only variant.
It has the same SA pull as the DA/SA models (i.e. good enough, but not a race/match type trigger) it has a few ergonomic upgrades as well, like the bigger upswept beaver tail from the SP01, ambi safeties, extended slide release and the slide is a little heavier to keep muzzle flip down, and magazines drop free.

It still has the classic lines of the 75B, but gets alot of little upgrades that really makes it a nice shooter.

So if you like cocked & locked carry and want a classic looking, but "up to date" shooter, the 75B SA is a bit of a hidden gem. I picked mine up for $450 NEW off Gunbroker this year. As the only other Semi's I own are 1911's, C&L is my prefered manual of arms anyways. Nobody bats an eye when someone carries a SAO 1911 I don't see why carrying a SAO CZ75 is any different.

It may clean up with extras, but I found the P-09 to have a extremely heavy double action pull and a single action with a mile long reset.

Recently acquired P07 9mm. I'm liking it a lot and I've owned about every type of pistol made in the last 100 years.

DA trigger pull is a skosh lighter from the half-cock position. SA pull is nice and crisp at about 4-1/4 pounds. Tack driving one inch groups at 15 yards.

I'm looking at buying another...maybe P09

Oh, and this one while I'm playing with backgrounds...

In hand, that little rubber base on the magazine transforms the gun, don't you think? It didn't come with my PCR so I ordered some of them and the gun went from feels-like-a-compact to feels-like-I-could-live-with-this-as-my-only-9mm. Those bases are nice on the full-size 75/85 guns too. Again, I love the P-01/PCR!

Like several others I have several CZs. Included are the 75b and SP-01. You can't go wrong with either. It depends on whether or not you want a rail. I can't tell any difference in how they shoot or feel.

If you like the SP-01, look at the SP-01 Phantom. It is the polymer version of the SP-01. You lose about 33% of the weight, but still use the standard 75 mags.

Wow! If the CZ is outdated what does that make the 1911!
I still like hammers the best. I must be outdated too.
Try the CZ, if you like it buy it.

I6turbo

Both the CZ P01 and the Browning Hi-Power are two of my favorite 9mm.s because they feel so perfectly contoured and exceptionally comfortable in my hand.

The CZ's are my favorite guns to shoot right now. They are easier to shoot accurately than most guns. They are ergonomic and reliable as well. Sp01 or P09, that's a hard choice. If you want traditional Cz go with the sp01 and if you want the newer design with weight saving go with the p09. If you want traditional with weight savings go with the sp01 phantom. No matter which you get you'll be happy and rather than regret no choosing the other you'll probably end up with both. The traditional CZ's do seem to have more options available in aftermarket than the newer p07/09 models.

Phantoms are brilliant guns. CZ USAs website still has them marked as discontinued but they are on Buds and I saw a few NIB ones at the FT. Worth gunshow over the weekend, so another contract over run batch must have come in.
