I'm considering my first semi-auto. Currently I have a J frame S&W wheelgun, but would like more than 5 rounds for a CCW, and I'm warming up to the idea of a semi auto. So far, from what I've seen I'm liking the CZ P-01. I've read rave reviews about it, although there also seems to be some issues with a rough trigger out of the box as well as a plastic guide rod. I really like the feel of the gun, but I"m wondering if I'd be better off just spending the bucks on a Sig from the start ? Does anyone here have any thoughts, opinions, or experience with the P-01 ? I do wish the local ranges had one I could rent and try out, but I haven't had any luck there.

Re: P01

The P01 is a great gun. Very accurate and light enough for comfortable carry (the PCR is an ealier version of the P01). Don't worry about the plastic guide rod, never heard of one breaking, but you can always replace it with a metal rod if you desire.

The trigger on my PCR smoothed out after about 700rnds, which is typical of what most report. The only mod I've done is replace the factory recoil spring, after 1500rnds (no reason, just did it anyway), with a Wolff 18# spring. I also replaced a few of the compact mag springs with Wolff's +5% mag spring, which seem to work much better than the factory mag springs.

Try it, you'll like it :D

I've been very happy with my P-01. I'm not quite as accurate with it as I am with my 75BD, but that is probably due to the longer barrel and sight radius on the 75BD. My one issue is that the accessory rail makes the gun a little wide feeling when carried IWB, which is my preferred method. I haven't purchased a rail-mounted light yet, so I can't say whether the trade off is worth it to me or not... No problems with the plastic guide rod and the gun has been plenty reliable..

I have the earlier model , the PCR and I also have a Sig P239. Both excellent pistols but my favorite is the PCR. It fits in the hand better, is thinner and for me, I shoot more accurately with it. If you don't feel a need for the light rail,
get the PCR. The trigger will smooth out after 200 or 300 rounds.

Lots of posts on this topic lately.

Still, I don't tire of advocating the CZ P-01.

Wonderful pistol--very accurate and reliable and nearly ergonomically perfect for me. Yes the trigger is a bit crunchety out of the box, but it will definately break in. The guide rod is mainly there to keep the recoil spring from binding. Because the rails constrain slide motion, it is possible that adding a rigid, aftermarket steel guide rod may overconstrain things on some pistols. However, I will wait for an actual gunsmith to verify that statement.

I love my PO1. I never noticed any crunchy trigger, and I am more accurate with this one than any other. It works, every time, and puts that high speed pill right where I want it, right now. I cannot advocate it highly enough....

I may be a little biased....

although there also seems to be some issues with a rough trigger out of the box

The cost of a new P-01 plus a trigger job is around the cost of a new P228, give or take some (though you can get used/trade-in Sigs for about the cost of a new P-01, mind you). And there's a good chance you won't need a trigger job. If you like the way a Sig handles, I'd go with that, but otherwise...

Do any of the local ranges have CZ-75s you can try out? I've found that if you like one, you usually like them all. :D

Well as a long time CZophile, I can tell you the PO1 is an excellent weapon. I also appreciate Sigs, Kimbers, STI's, What have you as long as they are good guns. The CZ will have an immediately comfy grip, will be accurate and tough as nails. Sigs just dont have the same feel to them in my hands.....I loved my 220 ST as much as any gun Ive had too.

As a holster maker with a name for CZ stuff, I get alot of business in all regards.
I make holsters for over a hundred different models......
The most popular gun I make holsters for is a Makarov, the a 1911, then the PO1. I make at least 2-3 holsters a week for them.....many many people sing their praises and with good reason.

Shoot well.

Never had one, but I love my PCR (75 compact) with decocker, which is my primary carry gun, and I've tried several 1911s, Glocks, and KelTecs in the past.

i've got an eaa witness - basically a cz clone, or tanfoglio clone, depending on how you look at it. anyway, i love mine. i'm not a huge fan of the 9mm cartridge, so it's not a carry gun for me, just a plinker, but for a 9mm fan the darn thing is sweet. very comfy grip, low bore axis, one of the best action types on the planet, imo. i can keep rounds on target at a pretty high rate of fire with it - that's what nines are good for but this one, well it's a beauty.

oh, and i don't like sigs - they're too pricey, parts are too pricey, they don't feel good in my hand and i don't like the action. i know, they are a quality pistol and all, but it's a personal thing.
