CZ SP-01 vs SP-01 Shadow Target... is it worth it?

If it appeals to you and you have the funds, then its worth it. It may also have some additional value down the road if you want to sell it.
But if you want to measure objectively, you'd have to calculate whether you could buy/build an equivalent competition pistol for less. That takes the emotion our of it but part of the enjoyment in buying/collecting guns is the emotional part.

See, I disagree that it would have better value.

A more expensive gun has a much smaller resale market. At what price would I want to save on a used 1k gun to not get a warranty? A lot. What would I want to save on a used 500 dollar gun and not get a warranty? meh, not much.

I lost more selling a near $1k P30L than even the cheapest Taurus in resale by total cost and as a percentage.

Reselling would probably net the same amount paid for it new in the Shadow Targets case. I've barely seen them sell used and when they are there, they aren't much less than new. The few used ones I found recently were even more expensive than a new one.
You could get the SP01 and get Cajun gun works to do some magic on it and get there cheaper. That's what I planned on doing for my next pistol purchase. If money wasn't an issue, I would just get the Shadow target and be done with it though. I think the hardest thing to accomplish is the cut in the slide to get the rear sight low like it is on the Shadow Target. If you do all that work on the SP01, you won't get back what you put into it for sure though. There are a few CZs I found that were totally worked over by CZ custom or Cajungunworks and they were selling for a pretty big loss on what $ they had into them.

The 'target' costs 2x as much... is it really 2x better?

2X better is unlikely but getting performance from a gun is like climbing a mountain. The closer the top, the more effort it takes. As things get steeper, it takes twice the effort to go half as far. Guns are like that. I have a Beretta 92 with a KKM barrel that I have maybe $750 in and it shoots very well. Compare that to a $2000+ 952 Smith that shoots better but not 3X better. However when it is match time, I take the 952. It is all in what you are looking for.

Thanks... didn't know those existed. I'm kinda set on the long-frame SP-01. But I'll consider that shadow... very nice.

I have the shadow and a sp-01 shadow. Personally I think the shadow handles and balances better than the sp-01 shadow but that's me.

I have been eyeballing that gun for 2 years. I just haven't been able to quite digest it as a carry gun, as I no longer compete. But it has a great feel and trigger. I have been toying with the compact P01, for a carry gun, to get away from my 26 and have an alternative to my 45's and pocket guns.

Look at the 75D PCR as well as the P-01 as it is a bit slimmer in profile as it has no boxy light rail. I carry one daily.
