OK, stick with me on this and then please give my your opinion. I carry a G36 for CCW. Have been shooting for a couple of years and realize that I was spending too much time "TARGET" shooting with revolvers and my 22 and not enough time developing and sharpening defensive skills. So....I am purchasing a 9mm to practice with...plan on working alot on the IDPA classification drill for practice.

So here is my problem, I love my Glock (even had a G26 for awhile but sold it to a friend)....but I have always thought the CZ was a great gun for the money. I have a CZ75 Compact PDR on hold at the dealer now....used gun but clean...excellent rating. It can be had with two mags for $310 with the holiday special. I can also pick up a new G19 for $477 with the same holiday special. What do I do? This gun will be for practice and learning....a "RANGE GUN"....I will still carry the G36 but practice, practice, practice....

Yes, I know that if I get the Glock I will have same site picture, same trigger, etc....but I plan on practicing more with my G36 anyway....I am looking for an inexpensive way to develop better overall defensive skills and the CZ has such a great reputation. The Compact is nearly the same size as the G19, trigger is different and site picture is somewhat different, but still nice with the Novak sights.

Do I save the money and get the CZ or stick with the Glock? Anybody shot these both to give me some direction?

Also, I am sure that a Sig or HK may be in my future when I am ready to spend some more money.....but budget is a big consideration right now!

So, any thoughts....

Thanks for listening to the true confessions of a fellow handgun addict! :D

I have both... Your cost for the Glock is a little extra, but since you carry a G36 and are already [apparently] comfortable with Glocks, then I say that's what you should stay with. The CZ feels, handles, and behaves differently than a Glock, so I'd say stay away unless you want to move over to CZs entirely.

hey bradvanhorn....

Thanks for your reply....since you have both can you give me some anticipated differences when it comes to shooting them? Will the CZ be different enough for me not want to consider it at all? I know that the trigger pull will be different and my gut feeling is that in two months I will wish that I had bought the G19!

My vote would be for the Glock, also. Mainly since you already have one and are used to shooting it. Bouncing back-and-forth between styles of gun can get frustrating. A far extreme that I endure, at times, is going from my Ruger MKII with standard (Luger) grip angle to my Colt 1911.

In a defensive situation, you may not have access to your "preferred" gun.

Best to get some experience with DA/SA triggers now, rather than later. I'd get the CZ.

Do you mean PCR? (A compact version of the standard gun?)

PCR means Police of the Czech Republic. A better gun might be the P-01, which is similar, with an alloy frame, but an accessory rail, as well. The P-01 is made to more exacting standards, but grip feels the same, etc. The P-01 was designed to replace the PCR.

I don't know of a PDR, although they do make a full-size 75BD (which means "D"ecocker.)

If so, its decocker based, and you can't carry cocked and locked.

I have a bunch of CZs and have had a Glock or two -- and still have a 34.

If you're happy with Glocks, stick with it for IDPA use, anyhow.

I, personally, don't care for the CZ decocker models -- nothing wrong with them, but I don't really care for HAVING to do the double-action first shot. (Its good with CZs, and better than most -- but its still a LONG trigger pull on the CZ DA models.)

Most folks find that the CZs "point" more naturally than do Glocks... But since you're already doing Glocks...

I love my G19, it shoots straight and without any problems whatsoever. Can't speak for the CZ, although I like the company and they do make quality weapons. The CZ75 is no doubt one of the best autoloading pistols in the world, but so is the Glock.

Walt....I appreciate your opinion....

Having been browsing this forum a bit I find you to be a good and trusted source of info. Therefore, I really appreciate your opinion on the Glock. I, for one, have found the Glock to be very "pointable"....but that is because I practice the sight picture daily. So I guess the sensible thing to do is stick with the G19, but the CZ is a good deal.

As far as PCR goes....I am referring to the CZ75D PCR as shown on the czusa website....that is what this gun appears to be....right down to the rubber grips and Novak style sights. Man, I wish I could afford both! :(

Check out the link above for the info....we are probably talking about the same gun. I agree about the decocker...it makes for a "softer" DA first pull but it really is long!

Thanks for everybody's input....probably put the G19 on layaway tonight! ;)

I would get the CZ P01 instead of the G19.....the only glock I have and will buy is the G26 and I really don't like it that much.....the P01 feels much better and shoots just as good..........

I'd look around and ask around for a factory-reconditioned Glock 19. They're generally $100 - $200 less expensive and every bit as good. My first Glock 17 was a factory reconditioned gun.

A used Glock is often a better deal than most guns, as replacement parts are generally cheap -- if you need them -- and there aren't that many of them. in the first place. <grin>

And don't forget to look at the CZ P-01. Its has a new trigger, which has more curve to it, which allows a slightly shorter trigger pull. (It, like the PCR, also STARTS the firing cycle from the half-cock notch, which is where it decocks to, so the trigger pull is shorter on the decocker guns than on the standard SA/DA CZs.)

Get a CZ 75B, or for smaller and lighter the P-01. I prefer CZ models with the safety rather than the decocker. I have two with and two without. I love them all!

Stay with Glock. Mags are cheaper, better customer service, tons of accessories, and you're already familiar with the manual of arms.

You can get great price on NIB Glocks from Ordnance Outsellers

Go with your gut. You are happy with the Glock, so why make it complicated by shooting two different guns.

I'm a huge CZ fan and I don't care much for Glocks, and I'm still telling you this. You already know what you want to do.

I am a big believer in practicing with what you carry. If the Glock is you main carry weapon, 36, than practice with it or at least the 19...On the other hand I now own just about 1 of every CZ model made except the P01 and my favorite is the PCR. It is a wonderful gun and just feels so right. It is a hard decision....I would buy the CZ and try it out. If you like it than stick to carrying it. Otherwise just stick to the Glock.

You basically answered the question yourself. You carry a Glock, but want to get as much practice in as you can. It is best to practice with what you carry.

Go with CZ

I am thinking about getting the PCR as well. But I really want a manual safety....like others...I have no need for the decocker. I prefer it over the P-01 because 1) low profile sights and smoothed edges & 2) narrower in the muzzle & 3) It's better looking. 4) I don't have a real desire for the light rail. Thus for CCW I like the PCR. I also prefer it over glocks. I don't care for the "spongey" glock trigger. I also prefer alloy over plastic just for looks and feel. Glocks just aren't fun to shoot. I have a Hi-power.....that feels like a work of art when shooting. I don't get that with Glocks.

Well, I've owned many guns in my day and for now, the CZ PCR is the best balance of ergonomics, shootability, pointability, weight and value. I've owned two G23s and never had a single problem of any kind with them but they just simply don't fit me as well as the PCR.

I grew up with 1911s and the 45ACP. Honestly, I'd prefer to have fewer rounds of a 45 caliber bullet than a higher number of 9mms but I have confidence in the 9mm with the best loads. When I first started shooting a lot of DA/SA guns (notably the Taurus PT99) I hated that first pull. But in the real world, not gaming and not just 'being ready' I feel that I am best served by either a DA/SA or a light DAO. The CZ pull is a bit long but doesn't seem to hurt my ability much.

I could happily live with a G19 as a carry weapon. I carried the G23 and had the utmost faith in it but at this point, there is no way in hell I would trade my PCR for a G19.

I'm with SGTB on this one. I own a CZ75B and a Glock 21. Both are nice guns, but are very different, and it can be difficult going from one to another in an emergency situation. I'd been shooting the CZ primarily when I took my concealed carry test, for which I used the Glock because of higher magazine capacity. It wasn't good. I barely passed. Just for my own piece of mind I retook the test with the CZ and did quite well. At the range I can normally shoot both guns fairly well, but in a high-pressure situation like the CCW test it wasn't so easy to switch gears.

I really like my CZ, but if I had to do it over again, I would probably spend the extra money and get a Glock 34 for my range gun. Hopefully this opinion will change once I find someone who can do a decent trigger job on the CZ, which has a creepy, spongy trigger, because other than the trigger it is a very nice gun.

Re: Pcr

Well, I guess my name gives me away :D , but I have to agree with cratz2 "Well, I've owned many guns in my day and for now, the CZ PCR is the best balance of ergonomics, shootability, pointability, weight and value".

I had a G19, sold it after I got the PCR. I much prefer the grip angle of the CZ over the Glock, but that's just me. After several thousand rounds with the PCR, it's still smooth and accurate with no problems ( I did put a Wolf 18# recoil spring in after 2000 rnds, but that's the only mod I've done).

Both are killer guns.........but Id take the PCR is my choice. Ive had mega CZ's and shot lots of glocks....If I only carried Glocks....then they are great guns, but the grip angle isnt the same as my other favs........
As far as quality, reliability.......bla bla bla they are as good as youll find.
Shoot well.........
