Picked up a Kel-Tec PF-9 the other day. Haven't had a chance to shoot it yet, but dry fired some. My question is, while not nearly as bad a trigger as the P-11, why does trigger pull for DA have to be soooo long? It would still be safe, I think, at the weight it is with the hammer falling about halfway into that travel, and have more accuracy potential.

Educate me, please...

When you pull the trigger on a DAO, you are pulling back the hammer (or striker) and the weight reflects the strength of the hammer spring and how far it must be retracted.

The P-11 does NOT have a 'bad trigger'. Quite the contrary. Most examples are very smooth and, compared to DA revolvers, comparatively light. The PF-9 adopted the P-32/3AT system of the hammer being 'pre-cocked' and so requiring less effort to fully cock before the release.

There is no practical way to lessen the travel without increasing the tension....as it must pull the hammer back fully for reliable ignition.

Sounds like you grew up on SA autos with their light, crisp release. DA and DAO are NOT like that and must be learned to shoot well. You will not make a DAO feel like a SA....ever.

Hopefully you are using a snap-cap when dry firing as the KT's are not supposed to be DF'd without one. And, you should be aware that the PF-9 does not have second strike capability....due to the hammer pre-cocking design.

I have shot a few guns that feel like their trigger pulls go one forever whereas others feel right. Take for example the trigger on a Desert Eagle - they feel very long even whereas my stock Colt Python has a DA trigger that is so smooth and so well tuned that it doesn't feel all that long.
Maybe it's more in the firearm & the level of experience :scrutiny:

you'll get used to it, just do some dry fire drills and shot a few hundred rds through it and you will get the hang of it. it might do like my xd's and smooth up after 500 or so rds, mine on my service model is smooth as all get out, plus i have gotten used to it and i know the trigger like the back of my hand that might have something to do with it as well.

You are correct, sir. And, the P-11 trigger might not be "bad," but it is for me. My fingers are a bit on the longish side, and I hit my hand before the hammer falls. No hammer drop, no bang, no good... for me. Now, my S&W 681 trigger... great. My CZ triggers... just fine, love 'em. The Kel-tec... well, it'll be an acquired taste. I like it, though; it's truly pocketable for me, with a reasonable round.

Do you shoot the 681 in DA? Or cock the hammer back? Is the CZ a DA/SA? If so, how's the DA pull on it?

I shoot my 686 well shooting strictly DA but on pistols, I am terrible. I gotta get out to the range more often.

Both with the 681... the CZ's are DA/SA... the first DA shot doesn't bother me with them... I can't explain it... the pull is very smooth.
