bought a Double Action only hammer assembly, complete with sear and
was hoping it would be basically a drop-in to my old S&W 65 3 inch...it is NOT a drop-in...hammer assemblies identical EXCEPT for length of sear and the DA hammer is clearly much longer...now, here is the dumb question part...is is supposed to be longer or does it need to be stoned and chamfered to match the old sear? (I could just push out the pin and move the old sear to the new hammer I guess, but decided to check it out and give it a try otherwise)...thanks for any advice on fitting this thing...

(Yes, I have a local gunsmith, but have enough sense to test this thing before relying on it and in letting him check my work before the pistol goes to the field with me)...

Yes, sears are made over-length so that they can be fitted to an individual trigger. By all means, try the old sear in the new hammer, and see what happens.

If you are determined to do your own work, I strongly suggest that you purchase a copy of Jerry Kuhnhausen's "The S&W Revolver - A Shop Manual" (available from Brownells at www.brownells.com) and study it until you understand how a S&W revolver is fitted up. The old sear may work in the new hammer, but not be an optimal fit.

Hmmm I could have sworn I already replied to this?

What model S&W is this?
Is ths a true DAO hammer or just a bobbed one?

A S&W DAO hammer usually has the single action notch removed so it can't be cocked manually.
Then a longer DA sear is needed because there is no secondary sear for the trigger to use.
