i just bought a dr 200 yesterday, and i'm a little confused.

the gun itself says .223 cal. the owners manual specs says.. ammuniton caliber 5.56x45, type .223 remington.

i've heard you're not supposed to fire 5.56 in a .223 chamber, but you can fire .223 in a 5.56.

i have both types of ammo. winchester 5.56 q3131a, and remington umc .223.

i was wondering if it would hurt/blow up the dr200 if i used 5.56 in it.

i've tried to find ammo info on this specific rifle, but no luck.

what say you guys? thanks, craig

Craig, I've actually heard the same, but then again, everyone I've talked to at gun stores say "it's nonsense, it's the same round". but I think I read it from a Bushmaster catalog, that only 5.56 can also fire .223. but .223 shouldn't fire 5.56.

I know it's not much help. but get some more opinions from experts.

for a short posit , you can shoot either through others. 556 ammo is a miltary term and is suppose to be a tad hotter, a tad thicker, etc. It does have a dif , but it is "teeneh." Your daewoo is made to mil specs, so no worries. That is a very good rifle , by the way. As good an ar clone there ever was, especially for military type usage.

thanks for the replies.

i tried it yesterday with 80 rnds. .223.
nice shooting gun, and zero problems with it.

i like the ak style gas system. the gun stays really clean in the receiver area.

i sent an email to kimber, yes they were the importers, requesting info on it.

i might have the local smith check the chamber specs to see if it really is mil spec.

until then i'm probably just gonna shoot .223 in it.

I had a Daewoo K2 for a while, and shot a couple thousand rounds through it, both 5.56 and .223. Didn't have any trouble with either.

The difference between a 5.56 NATO and a .223 Rem., is a slightly longer throat in the NATO chamber. You can shoot .223 in a NATO chamber, but it's not recommended shooting the NATO round in the commercial .223 chamber due to higher pressures generated by the shorter throat.

The DR 200 is the cosmetically neutered Bush 41 version of the K2. It still has a NATO chamber. Feel free to shoot anything through it.

the local smith checked the chamber. according to him, it's mil spec.:)

i found a group that's getting a big firing pin buy together, so i got in on that.

hopefully i can find some recoil springs somewhere, because i plan on shooting this thing a lot.

that's about the only down side to this gun, trying to find spare parts.

sorry i don't have any pics, i'm on webtv because the lightning gods hate me having a computer.

oh yeah, the gun store had another dr200 on the wall.

it'll be coming home with my wife soon. :D

DR200

craig.
how much did you pay for your daewoo dr200 i have had one for about 11 or 12 years now and absolutely love it. shoots both 223 and 5.56x45 equally well.
so shoot and enjoy.
kenny.

Reviving an old post here with a question:

Why is it that because someone determined it to be mil spec does that mean it is OK to shoot the 5.56 by 45 mm round? In other words, why does mil spec mean 5.56 is OK? I just don't understand. What is mil spec? Is the bore diameter a little bigger? Is it a quality/metallurgy thing?

nccavediver:

In this instance, "Mil-spec chamber" is synonymous with "5.56x45 chamber".

5.56 chambers differ from .223 chambers in having a little more clearance and a longer throat (the portion of the barrel that lies between the chamber and the start of the rifling). These characteristics tend to reduce operating pressure and 5.56 ammo may be loaded to a hotter with this in mind.
