My kids (8 and 10) are showing interest in guns and shooting and I was looking at various airsoft/BB guns. I see Daisy is pretty popular.

Do any of you on here have kids that use Daisy BB guns? Are they fun and reliable? Are there better options out there?

Red Ryder and safety/shooting glasses (so they do not shoot their eyes out) and they will have fun. I bought four, one for me, one each for my nephews and one for their daddy, the target kits and real safety shooting glasses each. Then their mommy wanted one so I gave her mine and now I need another, ;).

I started on Daisys, don't know the model, but they held 750 BBs, and were the next-door neighbors' who gave them to us to take up north for fun. At my uncle's cabin, we lined up cans on a plank atop a burn barrel and blasted away cheaply. Turned out my cousin had the same gun. I was probably about 12, and already had a .22 rifle, which I got for my birthday, but of course that wasn't for back yard use. I bought my own BB gun at 13, a Crosman M1 Carbine, which I still have. Just last year, I bought one of those full-auto DPMS SBRs and felt like a kid again. Adult pellet rifles aside, BB guns are still fun.

I am upset that in two weeks my last kid will be a legal adult and I can not justify buying this years WalMart version of the Christmas Story Red Ryder

They each got Friends of the NRA Red Ryders back in the 00's. I am not even sure how many Daisy BB guns we have, I see two from where I am sitting, and one lives in the barn, and a host occupies a space in the chop between a book case and metal shelving.

I got my first at almost but not yet 6 though Dad kept the removable shooting part ( different design in those days) for about a year and only let me have it when he was at least in the area and knew where I was using it.

Sounds like they’re fun little guns. I see they make a smaller one called the buck 105 I think. Might fit my 8 year old better as she’s still kind of short/small. My 10 year old would probably be fine with the standard youth model.

The only real "downside" to the Buck is the rear sight isn't adjustable for elevation like the Red Ryder (the RR has no windage, which it should have IMHO). But with the Buck, if she outgrows the short LOP, a Red Ryder buttstock can be easily installed for more LOP and years more enjoyment.

Just want to add that an oily shot tube kills accuracy. So don't overoil the gun, and if you start getting fliers, take a .177 cleaning rod and a patch dampened with alcohol and swab it out and accuracy will return to normal.

Some good oils:
1. 3-In-One electric Motor Oil. It's a good quality 20w oil, available from Walmart, Ace, and others. Costs about the same as Pellgunoil (around $4), but you get 12 times as much. Has a built-in applicator tip and cap, too.

2. Motor oil. Daisy recommends straight 20w, but it's usually hard to find. I personally use 5w-20. Mobil 1. There are no worries anymore about using detergent motor oil.

3. Crosman Pellgunoil. Available in 1/4oz tubes at Walmart. Expensive at around $4, but convenient to use with its applicator tip and cap.

You can't go wrong with a Red Ryder. I got one for Christmas when I was 4 or 5. My Dad put a small lock and chain through the lever and saddle ring so I couldn't cock it myself until I got older. The old ones took considerable strength to cock so it was a moot point since at that age I couldn't cock it myself anyway.

I ended up getting them each a Daisy Buck 105. Little smaller and shorter LOP for them. If they like it and outgrow them I’ll get the regular sized one.

I may get one for myself as well haha! They make adult sized ones too. Would be fun to shoot with the kids out in the yard.

Pretty cold outside today, but we went out shooting anyway for a bit. They did pretty good. They both seemed to enjoy it.

Just taught them the basic safety rules, how the gun works, and how to aim. Had them wear their safety glasses. They were hitting the targets pretty good. My youngest even picked off one of the little pill bottles. Fun stuff!

I may need to get myself an adult sized one now haha!

Good stuff! If the kids go to the next level, like 4H shooting competition, the Daisy Champion 499B is "The World's Most Accurate BB Gun". Single shot, peep sight and truly very accurate. This is a low-powered paper puncher and made to go where it's aimed, not kill critters. Still, wear the glasses. You would love one, it's therapeutic and easy to use indoors with the proper pellet trap (and glasses).
