Dallas Mayor Making Noise About Doing Away With Open Carry

I never understood the point of slinging a AR over my back and walking around, stupid. I can't even get in that mind set, or open carrying a pistol, just wouldn't do it. Go get a ccw and carry. Sometimes we as gun owners take it a bit far and walking around the town with a AR on your back is certainly do just that.

Out here in the good part of Texas, I've carried my deer rifle into the car wash waiting area with no problems. The sign says, DO Not Leave Valuables in Your Vehicle....so. It's a well mannered 25 year old Remington that is housebroken in spite of what the evil VSSF tells it while they are in the safe together. I know the VSSF is evil because it talked me into trading it's .308 big brother. Grrrr!

Sometimes, we as gun owners take it a bit far with asserting opinions or self-righteous judgments on others about how, and when, they should exercise their rights.

Stupid is not a teaching point in responsible situational assessment or risk mitigation for carrying a firearm. If we don't understand others choices, at least let's avoid stereotyping them for their choices until we have clarity. In the meantime, let's discuss options and reasons.

Yup, sometimes people are frank or even rude. Which is different from stupid, that marker being more of a situational thing. Some folks deserve frank or even rude behavior to get their attention; I try to avoid these people, but activists/protesters actively seek them out.

I do get a kick out of this call to ban open carry. Yup, OC is such a huge problem, that were it not for a hidden gunman who snuck his rifle into position & shot a dozen people from cover, there would be no justification for ending OC in Dallas at all at this time. Yup, such a humongous problem, that has anything at all to do with "stupid" people exercising their liberties in a way that has had remarkably few unfortunate incidents so far.

If Soldier-Boy in the protest had panicked and started shooting everything around him, you guys might have a point about this. But he didn't, and instead was pretty much a perfect gentlemen/polite citizen about the whole thing (even helping those near him get to cover from what I understand). The doom & gloom scenario never happened, same as it never does...

If you don't want to do it, don't do it.

If somebody else chooses differently, that is their choice (where the law allows...).

Many times "we as gun owners" are no better than the antis when it comes to "only those who do as I are smart or prepared...anything more is stupid and anything less is naive"

Has he figured out that Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) officers are fully certified police officers and not security guards?

First of all, open carry is letting the bad guys know what you have and they will take measures to avoid it or just shoot without warning, that's why I wouldn't do it, never said that other shouldn't be allowed.
Secondly and I think more important Is the bad PR it gives gun owners with folks who might be on the fence. That housewife who doesn't know which way to come down on the gun issue and then sees some guy walking into the supermarket with an AK-47 or AR on there back looks really bad. We are in a fight to keep these rights and we as a group need to take a responsible approach and not freak out regular citizens who we will need on our side. If the Dems get Clinton in office they will end up with the senate and maybe even the house and we can kiss our guns goodbye. They will ban everything under the sun with the exception of single shot firearms.

In the grand scheme of things open carry especially of long guns has the potential to do far far more damage to RKBA than it will ever do to further it.

Yes I get that it's a right but just because you can doesn't mean you should.

It's a handicap at a tactical level and it's certainly costing is in the PR department. There's literally zero upsides to promoting open carry and we should quietly move away from it and try to draw as little attention to it as possible or IT WILL be outlawed and possibly in the process drag down some far more important aspects of RKBA with it.

Probably they will take measures to avoid it.

We don't have too many people carrying AK/AR type rifles into supermarkets so I don't think we need to worry too much about that PR.

No, they won't be banning anything. Stop with the chicken little. The same people spewed the same junk about bans and laws and executive orders and you-name-it back in 2008, 2012, and now again in 2016.

Warp, the recent rulings said that politicians can ban certain types of weapons, that means they could ban semi autos and there is nothing we can do about it. The supremes made it clear that certain restrictions are legal. What is accomplished by someone carrying round a semi auto rifle on their back in public? Does it do more good or more harm? I submit more harm is done to gun owners as a group.

It is not going to happen. Plain and simple. Not. Going. To. Happen.

And yes there is something we can do about it.

I think open carry, unless hunting/fishing/etc, draws too much unwanted attention. BUT it needs to remain a right, beyond any contestation.. It shouldn't be open to discussion.

Personally, I prefer to maintain the element of surprise using concealed carry. CCW needs to be a right beyond contestation. I feel CCW is the wiser way to carry.

I support the right to OC because it is legal, however it's just not for me.

In my opinion it hurts us to try to desensitize voters with a slung rifle in McDonalds. Sometimes in life a touch of discretion is called for.

When and where were rifles carried in McDonald's? I haven't heard that one, pics?

They were carried in a Target. Plenty of pics of this available. As far as desensitizing goes. It will work. It's a common site to see rifles in public in both Israel and Switzerland.

And at the federal level it's not going to happen. Not. Going. To. Happen.

California is "special" and gets exactly what they vote for

California voters didn't vote for it; The CA politicians did.

Nationally, the voters didn't vote for the original federal AWB either; the politicians did.

I don't put any more faith in the current Republican MOC than I did in the Republican MOC that ended up voting for the original Federal AWB.

Would you like to make a wager regarding the re-election of all of the politicians that voted for it? Of course, the voters already selected those politicians to represent them.

The original federal AWB passed with a Democrat majority House and Senate

I don't bet on politics.

I didn't say otherwise.

I believe it was 38 R's that voted for it the 1st time. Some of the R's were in traditionally pro gun states at the time.

What happens if 38 R's vote for it this time? What if only 20 vote for it this time?

Again, I don't put more faith in this set of R's than the last set. YMMV and you are free to believe and have faith in whom ever or whatever you want.

BTW, google images has OC rifle picks at Mc D's, Starbucks, Jack In the Box etc etc.

These are funny!
