So you forged the damascus yourself and then ground the blade instead of forged it?

Look cool in damascus.

Thanks HSO,

You are correct sir. It's sort of between the Standard & Durendal size. I'm very happy how it turned out.

Cheers,
Fuad

A knife that's so beautifully made and perfectly finished that I could never bring myself to use it.

That's easily dealt with. Just purchase a matching spring steel version for work around the shop/farm/ranch/ and use the damascus as your "barbecue knife".

For the new folks, Fuad was kind enough to participate in a group buy program here where several members bought his spring steel AUKs .

That is where you and I part ways. I would use it, although I admit I wouldn't put it to as hard a use as I might put one of the spring steel versions. I honestly don't live a life that requires me to put my knives through the grinder all day every day, so I think for 90% of the things I could use it for it would be all right.

I might be on the crack, but wasn't there mention at some point of another AUK group buy?

Thank You Guys,

Made to use, and to stand the gaff. I like 'em to be pretty, but I also want them to be used. You can own a knife your whole life, but it doesn't become a companion till you use it and rely on it.

Cheers,
Fuad

Timbo,

If anyone wants Fuad's knives they can just check his website or contact him directly.

As to not using a damascus blade, why not? If the knife is designed to be used you should be able to use it. If it's only intended to be a display piece the maker will tell you. Unlike junk wall hangers from United or Cold Steel custom knife makers do not consider any of their knives as being less than fully functional. They may be blindingly beautiful, but if they can't be used they're not really a knife.

I agree nothing wrong with using a damascus.....it's not like it's a coating that will wear off.

Well, like I said, I would use it. I actually did go to Fuad's website, and am very much considering the AUK dagger... Very nice indeed.

Back to the usage issue... I would use it, but if you think for a second that I am going to use a 895.00 knife to pry open a paint can, or baton through a log, or any number of rough behaviors that knives generally should not be put through, but routinely are put through, your nuts. It's not that I don't believe the knife can take it, it's that I am not so rich as to particularly want to risk possibly damaging a 900 dollar knife. But, if I were to buy it (and sadly, I am not going to), you can bet that it would be carried with pride on hunts and fishing trips and camping trips and would get frequent, though somewhat less abusive, usage on a regular basis.

TK,

The maker knows what their knives will and won't take. They stand behind them for what they say they'll do.

Just because they're pretty doesn't mean it ain't a real knife.:D

Well I'm glad that beauty is appreciated here. Although I don't agree with the fear of losing nice things. A great customer of mine sent me 17 boxes of Cuban cigars. He said that he didn't smoke anymore, and all he did for years was maintain them. He couldn't enjoy what he had-But I did, and so did my dad, my friends, my customers etc... With the mindset that the things you love can last forever you're pretty much guaranteeing that you'll never enjoy them. Unless being buried with your favorite knife that you never used appeals to you. BTW this knife is listed for $865, and there is a 15% discount for military and civil service ($735.25).
