I've found a Wesson Arms 744 (Palmer, Mass) with a 6" fixed barrel for $350. The trigger is decent (better than ruger, not as good as S&W) and there is virtually no endshake. However, I understand the palmer guns weren't very good. The serial number is 44S0025xx, if that helps any. The shop wants $350 for it. Good buy or should I wait for something else?

744

Give it a good examination. If OK go for it. The quality control was a bit spotty during the Palmer era but that doesn't mean they were all bad. If you do find a so so one it's usually a matter of fit and finish, not functionality.

Changed my mind, I found a good deal on a blued Ruger Redhawk 5.5" in 44mag, so I bought that instead.

Thanks.

Chris

As someone who has both a DW 744, currently with a 6" barrel, and a SS Redhawk, currently with a 5 1/2" barrel, I can say, as much as I like the Redhawk, the DW 744 is more accurate. Mine is 20 yrs. old and started with a 8" HB. It now has the 6" light barrel.

DW vs Ruger

I have to go along with Tom C. only more so. I sold my Redhawk and bought another DW. The DW is the most accurate revolver out there under $1000. But the ergonomics on the Redhawk just didn't do it for me. the grip is closer to a single action grip than any other DA I can think off, and never could shoot well with a single action. The Redhawk makes funny noises when you cock it and the looks don't do much for me either. But as they say, a difference of opinion is what makes horse races.
