I went into the LGS today to see if they had the lcp yet and was talking to a friend of mine that works there. I told him I was looking at a 357 max blackhawk, so he goes in the back and comes out with a Dan Wesson 357 max that looked real good with very minor cutting on the topstrap, the cylinder seemed tight and the finish was excellent. The price was 350 which seems like a steal, any opinions?

I've been all over the net and haven't seen anything less than 699 dollars. My other question is can I get extra barrels and the tools from dan wesson still. This is all new to me since everything else I own is from ruger and most are single actions. I'll make my final decision tomorrow when the store opens, its a toss up either the blackhawk 357 max for 525.00 or the supermag for 350.00.

CZ still sells barrels and wrenches for the Dan Wesson. Choosing between the Ruger and Dan Wesson would be tough, but I'd pick the Wesson all things being equal.

I'm going back to the shop at 10 this morning to look at the dan wesson 1 more time. Does anyone have any tips on things to look for other than the cutting on the topstrap, like timing etc. The price almost seems too good to be true.

Even if the action is lunched, the cylinder is misaligned, etc, that price point really safeguards you from losing money.

Do the action check, disassemble the barrel to examine the threads, and give it the basic run-through.

I'd have already bought that gun. In fact, I'd have been there when they opened not having slept last night.

Just picked it up. Did the whole check and everything looks great. Serial # is e0016xx if anyone can tell me a mfg date, it was made in Monson Mass. One small blemish on the blueing on the left side almost looks like a small fingerprint other than that the blueing is perfect. It is also a heavy barrel with the full underlug versus the vented barrel. This gun is built like a damn tank. The only drawback is no box or barrel tool but I will order that with an extra barrel. The only thing I will need to hunt down is a manual.:D

What a great find.
I like the plum color of the bluing too.

Good job bringing that one home. I love that the prices are still so low on the Dan Wesson's because people just don't see them when they look in the gun case.

From what I found it looks like I can still get the barrel tool and the extra barrels from dan wesson and I located a pdf file of the exact manual for this pistol. Does anyone know if the standard 357 barrels (like the ones from the pistol pack) will work on mine, I'd love to build my own pistol pack and would love to try a 357 max from a 2 inch barrel. Also does anyone know if E0016xx is considered a low serial # and when it was made. There is very little info to be found for DW serial numbers.

Barrel assemblies for the 357 magnum will NOT work on the model 40 357 supermag. The barrels will, but the shrouds will not. That being said, if you have a barrel assembly from another supermag, you can use a 357 mag barrel and the other supermag shroud. (example: 357 mag barrel and a 445 supermag shroud.)

Here is some general interchangability info:

All supermag shrouds are the same, just different markings.

All large frame shrouds are the same, just different markings (44 mag, 41, 45LC)

All small frame shrouds are the same, just different markings (22, 32, 357 mag, ect.)

Supermag shrouds CAN be used on large frames (ex: 445 supermag barrel assembly on a 44 mag.)

Large shrouds CANNOT be used on Supermags (the slot in the shroud for the ejector rod is too short.)

There are only 2 different barrel nut sizes small & large/supermag. They are not caliber specific.

Frames are threaded differently according to caliber. So you cannot for example screw a 22LR barrel into a 357 mag frame.

As I stated above for the 357, barrels are caliber specific & will screw into any frame for that caliber. (44 mag works also in 445 supermag, ect.)

El Hombre I really appreciate your post thats exactly what I needed to know. I got a call from Genny at Dan Wesson today but was not here to take the call. At least the 357 barrels will work, I dont really need a shroud the one I have is mint. I'll place the order this week for a barrel, tool and spacing guage. I also found some factory 180 grain rounds from the ammobank.com made by PCI at 38 dollars per 50 and as soon as I save some brass I guess I'll break down and get a reloading set up.
