If you don't mind spending some of that hard earned cash, you can pick up a copy of "The Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson". Wonderful book and a MUST have if you collect S&W. Giving serial number ranges, dates, years of introduction and tons of info on the entire S&W line.

Jeff is right, but in addition the book contains many clues about various reasons some models or features - markings, whatever - make certain guns more valuable then others of the same kind. My copy has not only paid for itself, its made back its purchase price (around $30.00) many times over. :D

Hmm, I'll think about the book.

Just purchased my first S&W - I got a police trade M66 in from AimSurplus

Serial Number is 157K###

any idea of the age?

The catalog is a great buy. I've sat down with it many times and just read it. It's a terrific source of information.
