This made my stomach turn. Of course I had heard of such things but looking through the pages really drove home the reality for many other people. What a tragedy.

And get a load of the prices of these "deactivated guns".

The current exchange rate is about $1.60 per British Pound. So a £525.00 deactivated Glock 17 would be $840.

840 bones for a non-functional Glock 17? I think not.

The least they could do is sell them for what they're actually worth...$20 a pair as a set of bookends or something.

I don't know how true this, but from what I've been told most of the pre-smle enfields ended up as butchered up demilled rifles sold though out europe. If its true it would explain why they are so scarce.

its really no different than buying an antique gun that you never plan to shoot(after all, if you never plan to shoot it, it makes no difference if it works or not)...hell, its no difference than buying a painting or a sculpture....because you like to look at them and collect them.

Its for collection purposes. Most people there can't legally own the functional pieces, so they're doing as much as they can.

The idea isn't that foreign. Over here plenty of people have "safe queens" that they never fire but enjoy owning. Heck out of my 30-35 guns that I own only about 10 of them have been fired within the last 2 years or so, and 7 or 8 of them I've never fired.

Granted, I wouldn't want to pay those prices for them, but if I absolutely couldn't legally own a handgun, I probably would still want to collect the demilled ones.

Well, they may be turned into wall hangers, but at least they aren't ending up in a shredder or melted down in a furnace...

Really sad to see the M1 Garands deactivated.....especially since they have high value here in the US but instead their being neutered.

In fairness, the pre-1995 deactivated weapons are FAR less mutilated that any receiver cut counterpart here in the US. Most pre-95 weapons could be readily made live with a dremmel tool and a steady hand. So in one odd sense, a machinegun collector could probably build a non shooting but intact collection with fewer hastles in the UK tha here.

And no---it sickens me to see well made machines with great histories mutilated out of bizarre and irrational fears.
