I have been looking for a long time to get a barrel for my Ithaca Model 37 Featherlight 16 ga. I bought it in 1968, when I was in my early 20's, and it put a LOT of pheasant, grouse, woodcock, and duck on the table for the next 10 years. But from early on, I wanted a second barrel for it. When I bought it, my only choice was a 26" IMP CYL - nothing else in stock at my LGS. And for 10 years thereafter, not much spare cash to do anything about a barrel.

Given the changes in ownership, moves, etc. with Ithaca, when I started looking seriously, there was nothing out there, new or used.

In late December 2011, I happened to go to the new website -http://www.ithacagun.com/ - and they are offering 16 ga. barrels with Briley choke tubes! I emailed, and asked about drop-in compatibility (my shotgun is serial number compatible, from what I have read). In 3 days I had a nice response from the Service department telling me that the barrel is pretty much compatible, but should have some headspace adjustment. I was instructed to send in the shotgun, and Ithaca will adjust headspace on the new and original barrels at no charge - I was liking this already!

I shipped the gun, and 8 days later had a full estimate and a Sales Order to confirm. I had decided as long as the gun would be at Ithaca, I'd also like to have the receiver and mag tube re-blued. Barrel price is $225, comes with MOD choke tube. For another $51, I wanted FULL and IMP CYL choke tubes. I decided to stay with the 26" barrel, 'cause it has nice balance.

The total cost for all work will be $400. The gun should be done in 4-6 weeks, and I'll post when it comes back from them. So far, they've been great guys to deal with, and I think the price is reasonable.

Outstanding!!!! I have a 1957 model 37 16ga , mod choke, that I took two limits of ducks with this past season. Though it's not cheap to shoot, it surely is among my favorites to shoot. Glad to hear that Ithaca took good care of your needs.

Nice to hear about Ithaca, but I guess I am at a loss why you didn't send your original barrel to Briley in the first place and just have the install tubes in that barrel? it would have been cheaper and no need for headspace adjustments.

Why Not Original Barrel?

The reasons I didn't have the original barrel threaded for choke tubes:

1) The barrel wall is very thin at the muzzle. I was concerned that it would not thread, or might not retain strength.

2) I know how the original barrel patterns (beautifully), and that it is very accurate with slugs. I can and probably will swap back to it if I'm going to be hunting birds all day in the puckerbrush, or if I am going to a place where I can't hunt deer with a rifle.

It's a little bit of "the Devil you know, versus the Devil you don't"!

Briley does make thin wall tubes for guns wi similar barrels.afriend had them installed in a 1930s era Merkel over under, but if it does great at something else, then not as big a deal

I have had to deal with Ithaca Gun Company in Ohio on several ocassions and every time I have been impressed with their service. Congratulations on your barrel, now how about a 16ga. slug barrel?

Got My Ithaca Back. Good Experience All the Way!

I got my old, favorite Model 37 16ga. back from the folks at Ithaca Gun day before yesterday. It looks great!

At 45 years old, hunted heavily by yours truly for the first 15 years or so, used since when work, kids, etc. would allow, I wanted the "old girl" spruced up a little. I had always wanted another barrel in a tighter choke than the original IC, and now I have it! -With 3 Briley choke tubes, no less.

Here's what they did for me, and what it cost:

1) New barrel, 26", with Briley Mod. choke tube $224.00

2) Briley tubes in IC and FC, wrench, etc. $ 51.00

3) Re-blue receiver and mag tube $100.00

4) Adjust headspace on original & new
barrels for using either barrel (no charge)

5) Shipping and handling back to me $ 31.95

Total billing $406.95

What else they did:

New screws & pins in receiver (all)
Application of cosmetic finish repairs on stock
Replace yoke on original barrel
Complete inspection of internals
Test firing (of course)

The gun is still as smooth as silk, now has a complete factory clean bill of health, and DOES NOT look like a 45 year-old gun. Since I did not ask for a stock refinish, there are still the odd dings and scratches in a few places, but the touch-up they did on the finish makes them less obvious.

I'm a very "happy camper" on this one, and the people at Ithaca were great to deal with. The gun took a couple of weeks more the the 8 week estimate, but as I was told, they had a little time out for the NRA Convention prep and show. -OK by me, I can understand that.

Now for a quick trip to the range to check patterns, and its off to the woods again!

That's great to hear. I like the stories about happy customers and good service over the deluge of complaints we normally see on the forums. Restores a little faith, ya know?

I like the new Ithaca guns and the company is first rate..

I also had choke tubes put in my older 1962 12 ga model 37 and it is my favorite hunting gun.
