December 9 deadline approaching to comment on proposed NFA rule change

Just a reminder that the public comment period on the proposed change to the NFA regs requiring CLEO sign off for ALL NFA purchases, even those by trusts and corporations ends on December 9. If you haven't made you opinion known on this intrusive and pointless proposed rule changes, please do so before COB on December 9.

Perhaps, but there's still administrative law requirements in regards to the comments. If no one commented, we'd just be making the job easier.

Now that the deadline for comments is over, would anybody like to hazard a guess on when the ATF will act on the proposed rule change?

This is one case where I hope the .gov takes its good sweet time, at least until my application for a silencer is approved! Yes, it's selfish I know, but I sure went to a lot of trouble and expense only to possibly be told I have to start all over again.

Although we can't know for sure until it happens, representatives from the ATF have said that applications in process will be grandfathered in.

I have heard speculation about that, but you're the first person who has indicated they had info from ATF on the matter.

I certainly hope that's the case because my check was cashed in April. I'm hoping I might see my stamp in January, assuming a 9 month processing time.

From Attorney Robert Merting:

This afternoon I spoke with Brenda Friend, the attorney at the ATF responsible for answering questions on this initiative. According to Ms. Friend, the proposed rule should be published soon for a 90 day comment period and will appear on the ATF website before an official publication by the Government Printing Office. Once the 90 day comment period is up the ATF will have to consider ALL comments and respond. A flood of comments could drastically slow this down. Ms. Friend specifically confirmed that the rule would not be retroactive and those transactions already approved will stand.

For what's it's worth, we appear to have Brenda Friend's word on it.

"Transactions already approved" would seem to me to refer to ones where the stamp has already been issued, not necessarily the ones in progress when (if) the rule changes.

I hope I'm being pedantic....
