Deciding on a Concealed Carry Gun

I can't help you pick the gun put I will throw out some things I've learned along the way.

1. It's been said but go right now before you even get the gun and get a purpose designed gun belt.

2. Holsters have also been covered get a good one not a cheap nylon clip on. I personally prefer pancake style holsters over IWB because they're more comfortable.

3. Get your accessories when you buy the gun. I never buy less than 6 magazines when buying a new gun. Get a good quality magazine holder as well.

Lots of good advice here, even if some of it is contradictory. ;)

Just to muddy the waters a bit, let me say that smaller doesn't always mean harder to shoot. I have an all-steel SIG P238 HD that is much easier to shoot than some larger pistols, especially polymer nines or straight-blowback .380s.

It's all a trade-off. You want something that you like to shoot and don't mind carrying. And it has to be in an effective caliber. That's the challenge. There isn't one answer that's right for everybody.

James,

Concealed carry is relatively new in Illinois, and I've spent the last year and a half searching for the "perfect" gun/holster combination. While that doesn't exist, I'll agree with others that width and weight as well as a good belt and holster do matter. I never thought .2 inches or 3 ounces would matter that much, but it can. As of now, the best combination I found is the XDS 4.0 9mm with a Remora Micro Holster. The XDS has the flexibility of a 7 round magazine, which reduces the length of the grip or a 9 round magazine. I've found it conceals fine for me with the 9 round magazine.

In regards to people noticing that you're carrying, as long as you conceal it well I wouldn't be concerned. It took me a while to get over the "everybody knows I have a gun" thoughts. I can't remember the last time I paid attention to what others are wearing, and I'd be surprised if anyone pays attention to what you're wearing. Good luck with your search.
