Yeah, .38 S&W. A little hard to find and a bit high.
I may have asked this before TarDevil(in another thread), but do you reload for 38 S&W?, it could equate in savings eventhough 38 S&W reloading supplies aren't easy to come by. I just look up some 38 S&W ammo and Remington has a box of 50 for $21, that's not too expensive for a ammo that isn't a mainstream/popular caliber.

Not yet. I retired from the business world then my wife and I started a business in our home. In four years we'll either sell or dissolve and retire for good. Hopefully the cabin boat will be finished and I can free up space for a bench.

Have you considered one of Lee's hand held single stage press(about the only cal you can't reload with it is 50 BMG)?, they're the size of a shoebox and any table becomes a reloading bench.

It's as much about time as space, currently. We're WAY behind just shooting.
Also, the nature of our business necessitates a very low profile and strict policies regarding firearms. Thanks for the suggestion, I'll bank that for future reference.

Economically and fundamentally, I would have her try a 9mm lcr, CA Pitbull, Taurus 905.... I know it's not on the list, but if you dont reload......?
Her ears and your billfold would be happy.
So much easier than some of the ammo/reloading options posted.

Of course, the 586 is awesome.

It would thrill me if she picked the LCR 9mm. I'm not a fan of the CA simply because I like clips for these guns. But, again, if she holds it, likes it, shoots it well it'll come home with us.

And yeah, her fondness of the 586 put a smile on my face. Shooting .38 spcl isn't all that expensive.

I hear ya! Definitely worth it!

Nothing wrong with a 586.

If you buy it new, have a very good and long look at in the store as QA is not what it used to be. Feel the trigger (DA and SA) and check that the cylinder rotates and locks up, how the sights line up, if all the components (sideplate/frame/barrel) fit flush etc.

If you are going new, let her try a 3" Model 686. The 3" has perfect balance. If used will do, I'd try to find a 3" Model 64 in 38spl or Model 65 in .357. I think the 64 would do fine with less recoil and good +P ammo. My girlfriend loves her 3" K frames. Little more weight than the J frames and tames the recoil but not so heavy she can't handle it.

Maybe you should try a different direction. If she has long fingers, maybe she would like the feel of a Kel-Tec PMR 30.
It's lightweight, and has a bit of an oblong grip.
I'd let her try one, if it's up to her.

Semi autos are off the table, per the wife!

We've had both Smith and Ruger. Now, we have 73 clones and Ruger. Dad's 19-4 is the only Smith left. The gp and super Redhawk would be my first 2 options based on larger grip/trigger. We do have an sp101 4.2" but the grips won't likely tickle her fancy. Also maybe consider a Blackhawk unless the da is an absolute requirement, and if you get the synthetic checkered grips swap em off for full thickness plow handle. The wife and I both have longer fingers and the lipsey single7 and Blackhawk plow handle grips are nice!

Quality comparisons are even and high enough among the brands cited to let her decide on looks and ergonomics alone. You can just smile and let go with the well worn and effective, "Yes dear!".
