Is it unusual for deer hunting with an ar15 to be legal? I didn't get mine in time to go last fall, but hope to take it next time. When I told my cousin this, he was very surprised that it was legal in my state. Here as long as you have a centerfire rifle and don't have more than 10+1 rounds in it, you can hunt deer with it (also no fmj rounds for deer). I bought a special 10-round magazine just for that purpose. But I guess where he's from you can't use any semi-auto rifle.

A buddy of mine regularly takes Idaho desert mulies with 70gr handloads from his Mini-14.
I prefer '06, but that's just me. Good luck...

I would avoid putting more than 4 or 5 rounds in the mag, too, to resist the temptation... not saying you would, but I've always been skeptical of high-cap hunting because of some of the less-than-ethical suppressing fire I've heard laid down in the distance on opening weekend. .223 is on the low end size wise but as long as you're shooting well it should work.

With the correct bullet it will work. My state limits me to five round magizines but rhere are better tools for the job...Essex

Don't let Rosie find out! She is already telling people that people hunt with "machine guns", and as far as Rosie is concerned, what you are using is a machine gun. ;)

Go ahead

I have used my Bushmaster for the last two years, using Hornady 60gr. TAP. Creates a wound cavity you would not believe. I have never fired more than 2 rds at a deer, and never had to track one, they all fell within 50 feet of where they were shot, some fell where they stood. None of the deer I have shot have left a blood trail, which concerns me.
I am very picky of my shots with this round because I understand it's limitations. If I cannot get a clean lung shot, then I do not pull the trigger. I also refuse to take a jump shot, only slow deliberately placed shots under 250 yds. Provided you realize the limitations and can hit what you are shooting at, it makes for a light rifle with low recoil.
Good Luck
