Got a couple of liberal friends who bought property on a island in
Puget Sound. Now, they're learning about living in the
'country' - The lovely deer now that they ate the planted
tomatoes, the birch tree seedlings etc. are hooved rat bastards
and he's shopping for a cross bow. I suggested build a better
fence since the island is overun with deer. but a thought occured
is there something like deer repellant to spray so they don't graze
on the garden or decorative trees?

Orchard and serious landscape folks use several different products but I don't think they make much difference unless you're out there applying it all the time. I just let the deer eat what they want and then I eat the deer.

Crock pots make good deer repellant. If you keep em full of deer, pretty soon you don't see as many. :D

I've heard of a lot of things through the years, but pretty much, they get used to it all. The need for food drives them harder than anything can drive them away.

My presence seems to repel deer, but mainly elk.

Yeah. I was going to say, I'm not sure what deer repellant is, but I must wear it without knowing it during hunting season.:D

Another thought: tell him to release a bunch of wolves on the island. It works here.

Fence the yard and get a good sized dog. Let the dog have a door all to itself that it can go in and out. It will keep the deer away and still be the family pet.

Scatter a bunch of contraceptive pills throughout the woods near your home. In a couple years there won't be enough deer to cause a problem..........

Pfffft, haha

A friend of mine working a gun counter was told that brilliant idea a while back by an anti-hunter.

You need a misting bottle and a way to collect some human......... Well you know.

Tell the wife that this is the ONLY way to keep them out. From then on she'll just ignore them.

Mark your garden much like a dog would do trees in the yard.... hit the corners and come out form the corners...its sounds funny but ive seen it work.

the only repellents that actually work is wolf piddle. anything short of that is futility. the deer here in my area LOVE pepper sprays of any strength.

Go to the local barber and ask for the hair clippings and spread around their garden.

Dave's insanity sauce works well.

I know Dave's Ultimate Insanity is some tough stuff. One drop (about the size of a water droplet) and I was :fire: for quite a while. A 6 pack of beer, a loaf of bread, and 3 bottles of water did nothing to cool me off.

For the OP...I've always heard that egg whites mixed with Red Cayenne Pepper, then diluted with water (just enough that it can be sprayed in a heavy mist) will keep them from eating the plants that were sprayed.

Here is deer repellant that works great, a great family pet, alarm system, and gets rid of all rabbits and ground hogs. Actually one like this will probabaly capture a few deer for you, easily.
Wolves dont chase deer away, they keep them moving which makes them healthier, and helps the population.
Wolf urine even scares the biggest baddest dogs, and bears away.

I got a dog three years ago; and for the last three seasons i haven't seen a deer to fill my deer tags. The season before that i bagged 9 between bow, rifle, and black powder.

She was free from the pound...i still have the form with her slated date of execution, 8 days after i got her out. When she's not guarding the property, you can find her guarding the couch.

Spray them with the hottest habanero sauce you can find. Dave's insanity sauce works well.

I have always heard something similar. Hot sauce mixed in soapy water. Spray it on the plants you want them to leave alone. The mix leaves a soapy film on the leaves even after it dries that burns their mouth.

here is a thought. Deer do not eat the Washington state flower. The Rhododendron is one of the few flowers that they don't eat. Plus they would be supporting there state and making it more beautiful. hahaha

I've got 8-10 rhododendron plants with the bottom 3-4 feet eaten off last winter. Given a harsh winter, they'll also eat pine.

The only thing that positively stops deer is a minimum 8' fence (or a well placed center fire).
