I am looking for a good dependable slug that can hit a target accurately up to 100-150 yards dead on every time. I have previosly used the Hornady 300 grains but didnt really like them. Any suggestions?

How big a target? At 150yds I could probably hit my Ford Ranger 4 out of 5 times with my 870 and good old Remington Sluggers.:)rolleyes:)Seriously, that kind of accuracy on a deer sized target calls for a centerfire rifle. Because when you happen to get a deer at 150 you'll have a hard time not trying one at 200. I hear stories every year about ungodly long shots with slugs. I also hear lots of "we tracked him as far as we could" stories.Truth is-any kill beyond 100yds or so with a shotgun has a small amount of luck involved. Been there-done that-got the tee shirt.

Hello Glockgod I like your comments! I always felt the shotgun slug combo was good to 60 to 75 yards. The new development has inproved things a lot to the point with a proper rifled barrel and scope the range has increased to 100 yards for all practical purposes and can shoot well occationally to 120 yards provided you do your home work and practice a lot. People love to brag thus we hear about 200 and 246 yards kill. Its like dressing up a donkey to look like a horse will not perform like a horse!

don't short todays slugs or guns just practice

Browning BPS 22 in. rifled bbl, nikon slughunter scope, winchester 3in 385 gr. partition gold, and a solid rest .sighted in dead on 100 yards =3in. low at 150. Use the next aiming point in the scope and it is dead on at 200. And I am getting 4 in groups at 200 yards and I also have over 1900 foot pounds of energy at 200. That is more than needed for elk or bear. practice on coyotes in the off season and a deer at 150/200 is a gimme

I've heard good things about the Federal/Barnes combo, but I have never used them. Sorry, not much help.

With the the cover we have around here you don't NEED a 100yd gun/slug combo. I've shot way more deer at 50 feet and under than 50 yards and over. Closest personal shot? Almost had to hold the deer back with my foot to get the gun up! The only 200 yard shots you'll get around here is when you pop a deer out the truck window in someones hayfield. Highly unethical plus also highly illegal. Unfortunately that doesn't stop it from happening.

You're fighting a few problems with getting to 150 yards: Energy at target, Trajectory (uncertainty of range), Trans-sonic tumble, and Wind drift.

In general, those concerns favor a bullet shot at high speed, and since recoil then becomes an issue the bullet has to be as light as possible without loosing too much.

You mentioned you already tried Hornady's 300gr @ 2000fps; not sure what you didn't like but I'd guess that Winchester's 3" Supreme Sabot / 3" XP3 Sabot or Remington's Similar 3" Sabots might work.
