Defensive Ammo

Thanks for the link back to that interesting NYTimes piece, Blues Bear. I guess I'm assuming the 2,000+ 'service weapons' that are revolvers are duty belt guns, while the 'some' who continue to carry OD revolvers are just not quantified; but I could be misreading.

They don't even make it sound like an OD weapon is required, which surprised me a bit.

Yes, you are correct. NYPD has been issuing semi autos for quite a few years now, and academy graduates do not have a choice. However..... The 2" revolver is still carried as an off-duty weapon, both S&W's and Rugers. I stand by my statement of more than 30,000 approved for such carry, with the Speer 135 grain Gold Dot as their issue load.

That was the point of my original post, that this recently developed round, developed for the NYPD, was a very good choice for a defensive load.

The not allowing new officers to carry revolvers, even off-duty is a new one to me. I'll make a call Monday to see if it's true. But hey, it was in the New York Times, and they always get it right when it comes to guns..... ;)

Ahhh,

Forgot about this thread. Still haven't got a definitive answer on whether new hires can carry a 2" .38 off duty, but I did find out that NY just placed a multi million round order for .38 ammo. That would be a heck of an order for 2000 revolvers......

Still waiting for a call back on the policy issue.
