I've don't need another knife, Lord knows. But I want a new one. This will be an EDC knife so I want it to be medium sized, reasonably light weight, and one that can be opened with one hand. And I want a clip. I have no interest it the defensive capability/suitability of the knife. But I do want it to be an excellent general purpose knife around the house, in the shop, and woods walking.
I have narrowed the choice down to either a Spyderco Delica or a Native. But I have never seen either of these knives in the flesh and there is not a decent knife shop that isn't fairly distant, meaning it would cost as much in gasoline to get to the shop as the knife itself would cost. Consequently, I need some help from those of you who own or have experience with these two knives because I will have to order sight unseen.
I like the looks of the Native. But I assume it has no liners to add strengh and rigidity to the knife. First question: Is this a problem?
I note from photos that the blade is quite broad with what appears to be a spear point that thins down considerably toward the point. I wonder whether this is an optimal shape for a general purpose knife. I can see that it would be a mighty poor choice for filetting a catfish, but it might be a decent skinner. So which general purpose jobs does the Native perform well and which not so well?
The Delica (VG10) and the Native (s30V) use different steels and have different grinds. Is there much difference in sharpness, edge holding, and ease of sharpening?
My gut tells me that the Delica is the better all around knife, but the Native has the looks and I think the choil would be very handy for some chores So give me the benefit of your experience, which one is the better general purpose knife?
