No lessons learned from NJ's smart gun law.

Senate Bill: ‘Must Retrofit’ Handgun with Smart Gun Tech Before Sale

By Eric Scheiner | June 11, 2015

Democratic Senators Ed Markey (D-Mass.) and Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) have put forth a bill that could drastically impact gun sales in America.

Last week Markey and Warren introduced The “Handgun Trigger Safety Act”. It would mandate that in 10 years “anyone selling a handgun must retrofit it with personalization technology before that sale can be completed.”

It would also ban the “manufacture in the United States a handgun that is not a personalized handgun” within 5 years of the measure being enacted.
Smart gun technology operates in one of three ways: 1. Biometric readers embedded in the guns that recognize the owner’s finger or palm prints. 2. A literal code on the gun, like an iPhone screen lock, that has to be entered to make the gun operable. 3. A paired watch or bracelet that has to be within a certain proximity of the weapon to make it fire.

It would also “provide reimbursement to manufacturers for the costs of retrofitting handguns through the Department of Justice Assets Forfeiture Fund.”

I highly doubt this will ever pass. Too many holes. Too many arguments.

That being said, plenty of stupid laws have been passed. If it would ever pass, then the handguns I own would be the guns I own forever. No sales, no transfers. No nuttin.

Some of it already passed in NJ.

I see big profits in underground gun sales. These boot licking politicians will make another gangland business just like they did with prohibition.

This won't go anywhere.

Having said that, I think if you did have a working, practical smart gun, the Secret Service would be an early adopter. A crowd is a tricky place to be carrying a firearm.

I think that all Secret Service and other armed government agents be mandated to have Smart Guns before requiring general use.
Absolutely. I fact, I believe that it should be a requirement that ALL ARMED GOVERNMENT AGENTS OF ANY TYPE be mandated to use the benefits of smart gun technology immediately on their duty weapons, whether issued or personally owned - after all, they're on the front lines, battling terrorists, criminals, and violent extremists, so they should have the BEST tools for the job.

Starting, of course, with the executive protection detail of the US Secret Service.

Currently, I doubt the GOP led Senate and House would allow any such garbage from Markey-Mark and Fauxcahauntas to pass. It's political suicide approaching an election year.
Should the POTUS seat change for the worst, then maybe......

It never

stops. The ink wasn't dry on the Constitution when the first gun-control bill was introduced.

Not gonna get anywhere in Congress. Just another Anti bill that will die before it gets our of Committee (if it even gets into committee).

The use of these is Antis that need to be out of office self identify themselves with garbage like this.

One reason for introducing outrageous bills like this is so that less obviously outrageous but still repressive measures can be passed with the cover of "compromise."

By the time they get something like this passed we'll be able to print guns at home.

We could build guns at home right now if we wanted. It's just easier to get them already made and the ones you buy would likely be better. But my son built a working gun when he was 10. He designs laser stuff for the Air Force now (like a method for stopping heat seeking missiles). I guess he was more talented than the average kid but still it wasn't that hard to do what he did.

They introduce these ridiculous bills to keep the money flowing in from their uneducated anti gun constituents.

They know they have no hope of passage, but they can say "we tried"

It doesn't matter so much that it passes now...

What matters to "these people" is that the mythology of the validity of the technology be repeated often enough to be established in the American lexicon. Then, when the words are used in a "debate" the validity of the concept is no longer argued but rather accepted as an ...." any intelligent person knows..." scenario.

Just getting people to talk about it in the vein that one side is looking for "reasonable laws" and the other side is being unreasonable is MOST of what they want in the first place. They have the patience of true-believer communists and are willing to wait and wear down the opposition till the proper time (tragedy) presents itself.

The folks who suggest these things are not interested in having any sort of discussion, nor do they respect the rights of other Americans. Tell them I said to shut up and go away. (And that response is a great deal more polite than the one they deserve, IMO)

For the true "Progressive" there is no final destination they are trying to reach. Utopia is always over the next hill, so Progress is the goal, and as long as they are progressing, they are successful.
