On Tuesday, April 15, the Assembly Public Safety Committee will consider Assembly Bill 2235, a bill to forbid the sale of handguns other than "owner-authorized (or “smart”) handguns" -- that is, handguns with a permanent, programmable biometric feature that renders the firearm useless unless activated by the authorized user. No proven, viable handgun of this type has ever been developed.

Introduced by Assemblyman Mark DeSaulnier (D-11), AB2235 would require the Attorney General to report to the Governor and Legislature on the availability of owner-authorized handguns; once the Attorney General finds that these guns are available, only “owner-authorized” handguns could be approved for sale in California.

The law enforcement community has even expressed concerns about the use of this technology in firearms. How often has your computer malfunctioned while simply sitting stationary on your desktop? With that in mind, are you willing to put your personal safety, and that of your loved ones, in the hands of a sensitive computer system exposed to recoil, heat, solvents, dirt and grime? For an informative article about smart guns and the New Jersey law this bill is based on, please click here.

Would someone please tell me where I can buy a "smart gun"?:banghead:

I am sick to death of repugnant people playing government, who make laws about things which they, themselves, know NOTHING ABOUT! :cuss::banghead:

Long story short, they want to ban the sale of firearms, since they can't stop you from owning them!:fire:

It's time to end all LE exemptions to CA laws.

No AR's, no magazines over 10 rounds, no handguns that aren't on the "approved" list, no NFA on- or off-duty, no .50 BMG, no CCW, no loaded firearms in cars, for any off-duty or retired police, and make the cops use "smart guns" if it comes to that.

If I don't "need" it to defend myself and my home, neither do they.

There's no such thing as smart guns... only dumb politicians...

Looks like someone in California rented "Shoot 'em Up". No senator, those were not smart guns, they were Glocks with blue LED lights built in.

Every day I wake up glad that I don't live in California, New York, or Illinois. It's amazing that were all a part of the same republic...

I know I have posted this elsewhere--but I know those of us who have the pleasure of being active in trying to stop some of this bovine fertilizer, please go to www.calnra.com and go to the legislative portion of the site and use the One touch system regularly. It is set up so 1 email is written and that email goes to every person in the committee or house that is dealing with the bill. Just imagine how much fun these geniuses would have if every day they are dealing with several thousand emails on every one of these bills:evil::D:evil:. The way I see it, if they want to cause the law abiding gun owner pain, let us cause them much travail.

PS Doing something to stop this s*** is far more effective than just griping about it (per Ed Worley (NRA Kali lobbyist--using the onetouch system is effective):what::neener:

"Smart gun" technology does exist, and some manufacturers have demonstrated it.
Think about it, if you can have a manual key which unlocks and locks the firearm, why could the same exact lock not be activated with a small motor, a battery, and a thumb print scanner?

I do not support the technology whatsoever, and it would also ban most firearms in CA as most handguns on the approved list do not qualify to be added anymore. So if they were removed, very few handguns would exist on it.

It does however exist.

If you don't mind making the firearm far less reliable. Don't mind depending on the electronics and battery to work. Don't mind that if the scanner maflunctions, or your finger is dirty or covered with your own blood as you are being shot, stabbed, or bludgeoned to death. Don't mind if you grip it wrong when your life is in danger and it doesn't work.

In reality it is just another way to ban most handguns. It would succeed too by clearing out the approved handgun list.

The maker of metalstorm made a handgun and since all thier firearms work on elctricty primarily, implementing "smart" technology was quite simple.

Look up NJIT and Metal Storm. What does NJIT stand for? Well the NJ part stands for New Jersey of course! Where else? Taurus even partnered with NJIT to develop it.

This law already exists in New Jersey.
"In December of 2002, New Jersey became the nation’s first state to pass legislation specifying that three years after it is determined that personalized handguns are available for retail sale, dealers and manufacturers will not be able to sell, assign or transfer any handgun legally unless it is personalized."

I would not be surprised if laws like this were not on the list for a post Heller challenge.

If banning handguns is an unconstitutional infringement on the individual RKBA, and if we can get the individual RKBA "incorporated" under the 14th amendment to apply to the states, it would seem to follow that banning all but unreliable handguns would also be held to be an infringement.

All one has to do is listen to the strong objections put up by the LE community at any hint that they could or would be forced to use such guns themselves. I would think that that would constitute enough evidence for any court case.

I get a kick out of this. Smart guns do not exist. We might as well ban X-wing fighter space craft -- lest those pesky rebels blow up our death star!

In theory, the technology has existed for some time now. But it won't work. It is an instant liability, a problem waiting to happen. No police will use smart guns with the current technology, therefore neither should we have to. Simple as that.

In the meantime, let us petition the California state legislature to ban other science fiction weapons, like light sabres and phazers.

Uh-uh, no way! I'm already on the pre-order list for my light saber, don't you dare tell the politicians to ban them. They need to keep their mitts off of my Jedi Weapon. Voom!

The problem isn't that they're going to ban smart guns, it's that they're going to ban anything that isn't a smart gun. To correct your analogy, it would be like if the California legislature passed a bill stating that no one may own or fly any aircraft other than a cerified Incom X-Wing Space Superiority Fighter.

First, it was licensing and carry permits for the favored.

Next it was waiting periods.

Then it became features they don't like and some guns became unacceptable.

Now it's bans through various forms of regulation. Their plans are clear: ammunition purchase limits and taxes, microstamping requirements that are impossible to meet, and now "smart" guns that do not exist.

Yet, the cowards called California gun owners continue to put up with this.

or maybe there arent any left to fight the bills because they moved to Utah, Washington, or Arizona?

I'm just glad I dont live in any place that bans anything. Considering how nasty most urban places of the big five are, there are more reasons other than gun reasons as to why I wouldnt want to live in any of them.

Damn, someone beat me to the Judge Dredd line.

I live in CA and do think the gun laws suck but its kinda hard to pick up everything and move away just because of gun laws when ive been here my whole life.

Very true. Well, thank the Lord our sci-fi arsenals are safe. There is an upside to everything.

Seriously, though, this is just another one of those token legislation attempts to have the constituency believe that something is being done about the "crime problem."

Though, this is something that may reappear when the technology is developed enough to actually appear on store shelves...

In the meantime, let's laugh at gullible politicians!

I just heard that the California legislature is now going to require residents to purchase fusion powered cars to stem the rising tide of pollution.

No proven, viable car of this type hase ever been invented, but it's going to beccome law anyway. It's for the children.

By the way, now that I think about it, astronaut "Buck" Rogers has some plans we can crib from. He should be back any day now...

EDIT: Aww, crap. I was beaten to it. Should read the whole thread next time... :)

If the Cali legislatures mean a smart guns like this one: Link then I'm all for it.

I would love to hear their politicians describe how they're a higher breed of human in CA, and thus deserve special treatment, just like celebrities, especially if someone brings up that SCOTUS ruling that cops have no obligation to protect individuals.

trying to think of a funny anecdote to say, but am getting nothing, all I could come up with is..... Beatheadondesk.gif
