Has anyone had a chance to compare a "real" Remington O/U .41 against a modern .38 SPl O/U?
A while back I bought a Cobra .138 Special Derringer and really like shooting the darn thing! I have shot it with full power Remington and Wincheaser bullets and some 90gr, Low velocity "Plinkers" a friend had made up for me. He tried to approximate the origonal .41 load and power level best as could be estimated and the only tests we have left is the Chronograph. Thast would really tell if he got the Smokeless charges right?
I have seen the Remington O/U fired on both the internet and in countless movies but the internet .41 rimfire movies look to be close to my .38 Squib loads.
I know that the Remington was seriously carried and touted as a hideout/ hideaway pistol for many decades and frankily, the .38 Special is a much more formadable weapon!
As I said i have shot my Cobra .38 with full power Remington JRN bullets and also with Winchester Meduim Velocity CAS loads. Both xceed the origonal .41 BP load in velocity and ft lbs! The Cobra really bucks in the hand shooting full power ammo! I bet that if the little derringer were offered in the .38 CF caliber, that the dependable little Deringer would still be on the remington books today!
I plink a lot and find the Cobra .31 and it's smaller bretherin a Davis .22 Rimfire to be real fun shooters! Hits within the necessary Kill Zone of a Shilouette @ 21 ft are fairly easilly accomplished! Yes the small framed .22 is a nice shooterwith almost NO recoil For CAS style sidematch shooting, both the Rimfire Samll frame and the full size .38 both guns are legal.
SO has anyone found enough .41 rimfire to be able to make a comparison between the two? Sure would be intersting to read!

The .41 Short Rimfire's 130-grain conical at a nominal muzzle velocity of 425 feet per second from the little stackbarrel's short tubes wasn't exactly the Hammer of Thor. Its danger at close range was due to the outside lubed heel-based bullet being so nasty that wounds were virtually guaranteed to turn septic in the days before antibiotics were available. Add the low probability of a through and through wound, with the attending physician having to go dig for the bullet, and you were sure to have a real bad day.

IMO if you want to try and duplicate the .41 Rimfire in your .38 Special Derringer I would suggest a 158gr LRN bullet over a full case of Black Powder or BP substitute. That will be blast IMO... (pun intended)
