DeSantis "Tuck This" IWB holster

I am very disappointed in my DeSantis holster. It is the IWB "Tuck This" holster for a Sig P239. My problem is that the holster attaches to the top of the pants under the belt rather than to the belt itself. In theory, you don't see the clip if your cover garment rides up. Sounds great except that unless your pants have a piece of stiff plastic sewn into the top of the waistband or something the pants fabric deforms down and you wind up with the weapon submarining down below your belt. If you have mucho lotsa belt loops maybe it would work better but I personally find that any system that does not attach to the belt is no good. This problem happened with Dockers, jeans, and cargo shorts.
I will say the holster was well built and high quality just the specific attachment wasn't right for me.

Switched to a Galco leather IWB with thumb break and find it very good and if anything more comfortable than the DeSantis.

Learned a $30 lesson.

The holster is not worth the price or time to get it. Not only the problem you describe, but the 'hook' moves no matter how tight I turn the bolt. (broke 1 allen wrench getting it tight) and the gun 'turns' as you walk and will eventually dump out your pant leg.

Not a good thing or what they envisioned I imagine.

I had trouble getting used to this, but after using it for a couple weeks, and finding a spot on my waist that worked, I've had no trouble.

At first I was wearing it in the middle of my back. It was unsupported, sagged, and moved around. Oh, and you're right, the clip rotated.

After a while I found out that if I put it right about at 3:30, right next to a belt loop, it wouldn't go anywhere, it wouldn't rotate, and it would generally just do exactly what I wanted.

Since then, I've worn it with shirts tucked and untucked, no trouble. My girlfriend once asked me "where's your gun?" when I was wearing a tucked in shirt with khaki slacks. I said "my right hip". She looked down and didn't see it, even though she knew exactly where it was.

That said, I wouldn't say it's an ideal holster, but for a certain niche of use it works just right.

I traded it w/ desantis for a stealth, which I also didn't like.

I gave the holster away after I got my ctac and Gurkha.

Do you fellas have this problem with all J-hook designs (from all makers), or just the TuckThis DeSantis model?

I have a few FIST holsters with a J-hook, and they work great.

Alessi Holsters Waistband clip

I've got a IWB ordered from Alessi Holsters that clips to the waistband too. Now I'm wondering if this is a good idea. My Glock .45ACP is pretty heavy even for a dress belt so I could have the same sagging problem that you're describing.

I trust Lou's exceptional reputation so I'll just wait to see how it all turns out. I'm sure that he's solved this problem in his design.

I have a Milt Sparks Versa Max 2 that I wear with my shirt untucked. It came with Kydex clips that allow you to tuck your shirt in.

They take a few minutes to swap out...long enough that it's not convenient.

They also don't allow me to tuck my shirt in very much. The "cup" on the inside of the clip that you tuck your shirt into isn't deep enough / wide enough I guess.

I'd prefer to have seperate holsters for tucked and untucked wear anyway if for no other reason than convenience.

Pretty much the only time I need a tucked in type holster is on Sunday mornings so it doesn't have to be as nice as my Milt Sparks.

I used a SmartCarry for a while...instead of wearing it on my crotch I'd twist it around so it was on my hip...it worked alright but since it wasn't actually attached to my pants it tended to want to ride up on me.

Has anyone found the Holy Grail of tucked in IWB hosters?

After reading the comments about the DeSantis "Tuck This" I think I'll go with the Crossbreed even if it does cost over twice as much. Jeff Quinn at Gunblast.com really likes it, too.

VM2's are $119 holsters at best, that's what they cost. Their are so many "Clones" that some are more comfy than others.

You also have a lot of leather on the holster. The Silent Thunder is nice looking Kydex lined with a premium leather and the gun goes in and out like it's lined with butter.

IF you CAN NOT re holster your IWB due to collapse of the mouth then you have an awkward front heavy holster with the big clip up front that you can't take the gun out of without fighting it back in or using 2 hands in a way god didn't intend us to bend.

I am not working with or anything like that, Tucker Gun leather. Just go take a look at the Silent Thunder models.

you also lose ALL SQUEAKING or rubbing making noise everywhere you go. the holster also doesn't move around the gun like a leather or cheap nylon crap we are talking about. It's not going to wear your finish AS FAST due to it being still.

Around $100 and perfection in serivice. IWB, OWB, IDPA

You don't need pretty, you need function, stay away from nilon stuff like that, it's coarse and I guarantee you it's going to wear faster than leather would.

+1 Galco MOB IWB

I love my MOB IWB by Galco with thumb break. Wear with Desantis belt, however, very stiff and formal enough for regular suit or sport-coat & slacks wear. One jacket with single vent in back catches, but double vent jacket no problem. Working as a doc, move around a lot, squat, get up, and this is by far very comfortable.

Is it a J-hook? I don't think much of these either, precisely for that reason.

The Alessi "Talon Clip" - which I assume this is - is a world apart from a J-hook. It goes over the belt so the gun's weight is fully supported, and also "bites" into your clothing a little bit for added stability. You should have no problem with it.

About 5 months ago I switched from my Milt Sparks VM2 to the Crossbread Supertuck. I am much happier with the Crossbread and it was half the cost of the VM2.

What I liked better on the VM2:
- The VM2 had leather loops that made feeding the belt through easier and they matched my belt so if my shirt rode up they wouldn't stand out. However, they had a tendency to slide around on my belt. The Crossbread has metal clips that clip over your belt. It's a little more difficult to put on but it stays put better.

What I like better on the Crossbread:
- doesn't slide on my belt
- kydex holster is easier to draw and reholster than the leather VM2 (Crossbread still has a leather backing for comfort)
- doesn't squeak like my VM2 did (I'm assuming all pure leather holsters have the same squeaking problem)

I gave up on trying to carry a full size gun with my shirt tucked in. Most of the time I'm going untucked. If I must tuck in, I just carry a pocket pistol.

For a J-hook to work well, you need it to be right next to a belt loop and you also need to have a reasonably tight waistband.

This is definately an option that requires special considerations/compromises to work optimally.

I'm glad I spotted this thread as I was contemplating ordering one of these holsters. Based on these reviews, the desantis tuck this would be taking up space in my holster drawer.

I had problems with the J-hook on a early version of Galco's Ultra Deep Cover tuckable. It went by a different name a few years ago. The holster was well-made, but the j-hook, or any j-hook in my opinion, does a poor job of weight transfer. It puts all of the firearm weight into one little area, that being the top or bottom of the plastic hook, depending on the company and holster model.
I do like the tuckable concept, and have had good results with a High Noon Tailgunner with Clip (and yes, I believe their ideas on why j-hooks do not work are probably correct.)
Two other holsters I really like and use for a Kahr K-9 and a 3" Kimber are the Fist IWB Interchangable-Cantable-Tuckable, and Tucker's Cover Up Plus. Plus all 3 outfits have great customer service and shipped their products on time or earlier!
