I need help with a problem that may just be peculiar to me. I just bought an IWB holster for my "J" frame .38 SPL that I want to carry in the small of my back. The holster has a "J" clip that is supposed to hook over my pants and under the belt. The problem is, it is tugging the material of the pants down and there is no support from the belt. Is there a split belt available anywhere that supports the weight of the gun as well as allows the hook to function during a draw?

Thanks in advance....

Not sure about that. You could fashion (sew) something for your belt. Me, I've found J-clip rigs don't really work that well for the reasons you mention. Good luck.

That is the characteristic of the J-Clip. Here is High Noon's take on J-Clips, and why they don't use them.

Of course there are several makers that use a clip that just goes over the pants and not the belt such as the Alessi Talon and other holsters that use the Talon clip. I would think it would probably work for a little gun like a J-Frame, but Alessi even makes them for large pistols like 1911's.

I think the idea may be to have the belt tight enough to press against the clip an hold it in place. Also, having a gun belt would probably help. At the very least a Wilderness Instructor belt would provide support and allow precise tension adjustment.

the closest thing I can think of is the "Beltster"

Maybe they'd whomp you up a belt with two little pass-throughs or a normal one and a little one for the rear clip?

Don't know, SOB carry and J-clips are outside my area of expertise, I find that strong-side carry just behind the hip with a good hybrid IWB holster hanging from a good gun belt. (CrossBreed SuperTuck and BeltMan belt)

I always recommend a good, purpose-built gun belt no matter what the gun and holster being carried, but with a J-hook, there is just no help for this problem. Moreover, carried vertically in the center of your back, I see no way to draw the gun with a perfect, straight-up motion; you will have to pull sideways at least a little. Any pressure on it other than straight up increases the likelihood that the J-hook will slip out from under your belt.

If it just doesn't work out for you, take comfort in the fact that everyone who has carried handguns has a box of holsters that also didn't work out. :)

I second what Mr. Haranguer said. I have a Hunter brand holster like you are trying, didn't work either. The pistol would not stay put, unsafe and embarrassing. I've successfully culled out my holster draw, thank goodness. Some folks swear by the Remoras, I've never tried one, tho. Good Luck. A good gun belt and IWB holster is the way to go. I found a good belt at a local western supply store, they can be found.

I have used thebeltman for years now and love them. I buy the 7 hole versions instead of the 5 hole as they fit better when using an IWB type holster as the hole centers are on 3/4" centers instead of 1" centers. I might add they also look great and both my black and brown I've owned now for over 20 years and have held up perfectly.

I've heard of some belt manufacturers butting velcro on their belts for use with a j clip that also has velcro on it. Myself I wear a Theis Holster with Kydex belt clips on a bullhide belt. I generally wear black so that might help, but Youd really have to be paying attention to notice my belt clips
