Design me a good 20 round AR mag

I have some old grandfathered aftermarket 20 round AR mags that I need to do a total 'rehab' on (this means new bodies, followers, floorplates & springs.)

So, let's design from the ground up, a great 20 round AR mag!

I am thinking:

1) USGI 20 rd body.

2) Magpul follower. (they say for 30 rounders, work with 20s?)

3) Magpul 'ranger' looped floorplate.

4) Spring? a good one?

Technically no. If you have a grandfathered magazine then you can replace as many parts as you want on it. So if you need to you can have the magazine totally rebuilt. It gets illegal when you construct a magazine from only newly manufactured parts. As long as it was based upon a grandfathered magazine it is legal. Kind of reminds me of Theseus's paradox, "When every component of the ship has been replaced at least once, is it still the same ship?"

Magpul follower, ISMI 20-rd. chrome silicon spring, USGI body. If you install the Magpul Ranger Plate, you may lose a round or two of capacity. My 30-round AR mags will only hold 29 with the Ranger Plate installed, 28 if I want to be able to reload with the bolt down. Be aware.

living in az i obviously don't know much about the draconian laws in some states, but i thought you had to retain at least the magazine body. so if you buy "replacement parts" for the whole magazine and retain the old one, wouldn't that be a new, separate magazine?

I don't think I'd use a Magpul follower in a 20 round mag. I think they'll reduce capacity, and the anti-tilt feature isn't needed with the 20's straight mag body. See if you can scarf up some of the old GI aluminum followers, which are the best for 20s.

Not to get too off track, but nope, the CA DOJ does not consider a 'serialized component' to a magazine. Thechnically you could have a bunch of old socks that happens to feed 15 rounds of .223, and I could replace it piecemiel with USGI parts

The simple posession of mags in CA is actually not controled, however the import, purchase, transfer, gifting, or manufactuar is. (replacing parts of an existing mag is not considered manufactuar of a new mag per DOJ.)


It makes a bit of sense, just about all the parts on my old mags are worthless right now and need rehab (including the body.)



Now! back to the topic at hand, where can I order just the bare USGI bodies?

IIRC, the Magpul follower legs have to be ground down shorter in order to function properly in a 20rd. magazine.
