I had every flavor of M1A from NM to SOCOM to Scout. Had a FAL. I now have Armalite 20" fixing to get a 16" I am not a rich man so I researched like crazy before making my decision.

Why?
Dont have $$$ for a Larue, KAC Noveske.

Armalite comes with double lapped chrome lined barrel standard (cept stainless). Unless something has changed RRA and DPMS dont even offer this as a option.

Weighs less than any flavor of M1A. (dont know actual weight but felt lighter)

Easy to work on myself.

I hear Armalites CS is the gold standard. But have yet to need it.

19 round mags "bug" me.

They take all of Magpul goodness. (just buy the grip wedge if getting a MIAD about $4)

.308 PMAGS are not like their lil brothers. I handled some and they seem a lil flimsy. Not saying they dont work or are a bad product, just not what the 5.56 mags are. I think its due to their length. Armalite mags are expensive unless you buy 5 or 10, then they are on par with the rest.

My only regret is not getting the 16" from the get go.

Hey MachIVShooter, how do you like your HOWA? I was looking at those online, I would like to touch one to get the feel for it, but I was definitely interested in one of those. Of course there's a lot of rifles, handguns, AR's, AK's and everything else I'm interested in. OH Well....

I was checking out Bass Pro shop the other day, looking at Varmint rifles, deer rifles and all that, mostly the ones on the floor racks that you can touch. I was quite disappointed with what I was seeing. Looking at the Remingtons, Savages, Weatherbys... On the remingtons and savages, what I was disappointed in was how sloppy the bolt actions were. Is that normal? I ask because I've had the opportunity to fire some older models, bolt actions, and they were no where near that sloppy with the bolt handle and carriers. Maybe this question is for another thread - sorry about that, I'll post over there. Thanks

StrangeBob,
I was looking all over the place online, you can build your own, if you're into that, or buy and build to your specs for under 2k - I was talking to a couple of shops in my area, southern nevada, and yeah, definitely can get a custom build to your own specs under 2k.... I'm talking weapon system only, I'm not including glass, lasers, or any other feature.

If high cap mags are an issue wherever you hunt - dpms makes 4 round magazines for its ar10 pattern rifles.... problem solved.

You know, you might want to look into the newer 6.8 spc, fits the ar-15 platform. Better ballistics than 5.56 and still enough power similar to .308 or that's the claim.. I'm interested in that, definitely!

I'm also saying this because of what I've read in the magazines and online. I have no experience with that caliber, just thought that might be an option to look into.

Thanks again for all the opinions. Lower Left, I do think a 6.8 is desirable but because of ammo availability the 7.62/.308 is more desirable right now.

W.E.G., I found this definition:" . . . It may also refer to a specific combination of hardware and operating system and/or compiler, as in "this program has been ported to several platforms". It is also used to refer to support software for a particular activity, as in "This program provides a platform for research into routing protocols".

Though specifically referring to computers it is also referring to operating systems. I found almost a dozen definitions for "PLATFORM" . This was included but was down on the list at #6 : 6. a. the thick raised sole of some high-heeled shoes
b. ( as modifier ): platform shoes

I appreciate you bringing that(the platform type shoes) to my attention but I wasn't anywhere near speaking of any type of shoe.

I am leaning toward the DPMS AP4, 16" carbine type. It is lighter than other offerings. Thanks again for everyones participation!

The one very desirable option not listed is to get an upgraded trigger. The stock triggers of every AR type rifle I have handled run from dreadful to horrible. Heavy gritty, creepy and dificult to control. Most manufacturers offer as an option, upgraded triggers. If not, then Timney, Jewell etc etc are on the market.
Your targets will appreciate the improvement.

Roger

I have a DPMS LR308 and I cant speak more highly of it. Mine has the stainless bull barrel so its a little on the heavy side but for where I use it thats not a problem.

IMHO unless you have the spare cash to drop on the Larue OBR, KAC or LMT somewhere in the $3K range without optics. The DPMS is just as accurate for the ranges you are talking about. Mine is amazingly accurate, ill post a photo i put 3 under a penny at 100 yards when i zeroed it using 150grain Hornandy Super performance SST . Using the right load you can get some great accuracy.

I like that the DPMS also is kinda of a KISS rifle, no forward assist or Ejection port cover.

The only reason i would steer you away from the Armalite is that the magazines for it are kinda pricey.

Post a pic of what you get, my camera broke so i haven't gotten pics of mine up yet.

Jeremy ... who's the maker of that pretty thing? Upgrades to the rifle itself?

I made it... used my SA Inc receiver and chopped a Chinese M14 bbl to 18.5" and installed it threaded it for FAL threads and put an FS2000 hider on it. Then put the whole thing in a Troy MCS "chassis" and added KAC front and rear BUIS. Once installed it's bedded and floated and you have all the rails you need for optics etc. and you can put any type of AR stock/pistol grip on it.

If you wanted to go this route just get a SA Inc Scout Squad rifle and the Troy stock and go from there.

As pictured it weighs 11.2lbs

I had a chance to handle a Kel-Tec RFB (Rifle, Front-ejection, Bullpup) the other day, and came away impressed. It's made here in Florida, and uses metric FAL magazines, and is a true ambidextrous design, since the empty cases are pushed out a chute at the front, rather than being flung out an ejection port.
It's one short, handy little puppy, only about 27" overall. It's a lot more compact than my M14s. If there ever get to be enough of them around that a used one shows up at a decent price, I'd be tempted.
